Grass seeding conundrum.

Another option would be to feed grass seed and clover to the calves through a creep feeder in the late summer/ autumn. But get the ph and P and K right first and kill as much of the weeds. I would recommend forefront.

Looks oks like your doing a great job, we have a lot of land like that and cows and manure gave trebled the grazing output. The manure will help the P&K but get it sampled so you know where you are. As I said before and others have mentioned seeding through the cattle is a good option but harrowing then sowing in the early autumn straight after grazing is a good way to get some

Cheers thanks for the comments.

Hopefully soil samples being taken tomorrow evening last job to send off on Monday all being well.
After this will see what ph is to start with first and work on that and hopefully Harrow and seed late summer early autumn.

Guttler greenmaster may be the tool to pick your way around there, try and find a contractor.

It’s tough ground.

It definitely is tough ground.
Learnt to drive on these hills.
4 wheel drive only any good going down hill really
Took flat land tractor driver out today while spreading.
He went a very green :wideyed:

My mowing ground isn’t much better. :banghead:

I’ve looked at these online
Pick my way around would be best way to describe it lol
There ain’t many folk around my way with tackle like this.
Maybe I should buy 1 and contract out lol.

Is that a 2 wheel drive tractor?

No it’s a 4 wheel drive.
Universal 640 dt.

Could only go past circle with 3/4 off a load yesterday so borrowed friends 6810 jd today thought it would be on top of job with same spreader but no same place came to a stop:banghead:

Won't know for another few weeks but we put everything in the muck spreader this year and clarted the hayfields recently. Muck, prilled lime and a token bit of grass seed. A quick inspection of chunks around the fields showed that the lime was evenly embedded in the dung. Only just got a rain yesterday so will see if anything is sprouting out of the clods in a week or so.

I would say it would work - same idea as feeding seed to stock and then letting them spread it via dung. Obviously it will not transform land, if that is what you're wanting to do. Especially with moss, difficult for anything to penetrate it.

What cool country @Karliboy - is that hawthorn in full flower everywhere?

Yeah full bloom everywhere here.

As pretty as it is I’m currently thining it out a little every spring just before the birds start nesting. 8 or 10 every year is enough (It’s a horrible job trying to get underneath with the chain saw)
it’s amazing how much grassland 2 or3 Hawthorne trees can swallow up.
Along with the yellow bushes there going as well.

All the hawthorn was out here in full force and heralded a hot dry summer - will be interested to see if it is the same for you this year?
Not that I am sure that it is a clue worthy of delaying a seeding until autumn, but I would keep it in mind that it could be the case.... we missed much of our growth as a result of rain not being forthcoming when we needed it.

As an aside - if you have moss issues, check your sulphur levels via herbage / tissue testing, low S can often be something that favours moss buildups, and possibly won't be evident in soil S tests.
