Grass Topper

Which is better for topping, trailed side mounted, hydraulic side mounted or a disc mower?

Need to know what tractor you have and what you intend to cut with it.

Front mount flail topper are ace but the finish left by things like the Spearhead batwing is impressive and can cover big areas in no time.

Even a rear mounted flail does a far better job than anything else we have tried, seems to pick up what the wheels have run down. The herd manager is at last happy with the residuals.

Some are better than others. If all you wanted to do was top down grass paddocks to bring them back into line with growth rates I would use a disc mower.

The cleaner the cut, the faster the regrowth, so for grass it should be a finger mower, but not practical. For rushes , hammer them away with a flail and they dont regrow so fast.

Not with flints and moles! How to wreck a disc mower in one easy move. We always use "topping skids" on our disc mower, otherwise the beds don't last a year, but the residuals are too great for the cow paddock management.

My ancient Spearhead Batwing has a bit of welding on my ‘to do’ list, so I topped a couple of fields with my disc mower instead. All the experts, not just those on here, say a disc mower makes a cleaner cut than a topper so regrow this will be faster, but personally I could see know difference in the job it did compared to the Batwing. All it does is makes the job slower and risk damage to a more delicate piece of machinery.

Off set topper here does a good job and doesn`t need too much power. Don`t get a topper that the tractor wheels go over the target first if you want a tidy job (I`ve no knowledge of flail toppers mind). Rushes are too tough for most rotary toppers and cause shear bolt issues, so if you`ve got them I would be thinking flail job...
( I stand to be corrected but I wonder if flail toppers may need more power and be less adjustable for height - no doubt I`m about to be educated though...;):ROFLMAO:)
