Grazing kale

the trouble is not only are they low in I .... its also because brassicas contain glucosinolates, which block the uptake of iodine from that diet. grass doesn't ,even though it also doesnt contain much iodine/ need s supplementing
clover can do the same thing as well , ie cause goitre.

Don’t they say at grass they talk about a hungry cow getting half it’s daily intake in a 3 hour grazing slot, so two hours at kale could be a fair intake

Presumably they been on grass before they go to the kale so won't be hungry so will just be haveing a top up kale .[/QUOTE]

Got the Kale in, in mid June, added a few stubble turnips to the mix, broadcast about 6kg an acre of oats before drilling.
Quite please with it, Oats are about 4 ft and kale about 3ft turnips as big as your fist.
Not bad considering the flea beatle had his share followed by the pigeons rabbitts and the deer, now the sawfly is hammering the turnips but not touching the Kale, looking forward to grazing it this winter, cattle should go in in early nov.

Looking good!

Pigeons hammered our kale.
Then sawfly had a go at the main turnips so had to spray
Looking good now though

Ohh!!!! That be that theory f3cked then ......
Can't he spray at night or is there telegraph poles in field..........🤔
it's one of the reasons I'm putting in a mix of seed, something will grow comewhat may.
Organic so can't spray or use treated seed. To be honest I'm happy with that! (y)

Don't think anyone can get treated seed any more

Don't know if this is true or not.... but in the 1800's sawfly was a major pest before being wiped out or disappearing in the early 1900s,
Before that, apparently gorse was dragged through the crop to knock the larvae to the ground.....

....... can do you a good deal on some gorse 🤑🤠😂

Annual Clovers do well in the mixes

Ime annual clovers contribute very little DM yield, they just don’t need much in the way of fert.
One of my fields this year (sprayed for sawfly tonight :banghead: ) is Appin turnips, westerwold, red clover, berseem clover, crimson clover & half a kilo/ac of an odd brassica mix I had left over in a bag. The brassicas are providing for more of the crop than the clovers, but I’m sure they’ll contribute a bit of variety.

In another I have the same mix without the brassicas, where there is a good bit of keep ready for weaned lambs, but I’m pretty underwhelmed by how it’s done tbh. I’m not sure I’ll bother again, after trying it for two years.
