Grey Fergie Tef20 Not starting.

Hello there before Christmas i got the whole engine on my little fergie down up. When i got it it home i got her all built back up and tried to start her, I first turned the engine over before adding any fuel to get the oil up around the head and to make sure it was building pressure which it did. I then added fuel and went to start the tractor but it would not fire. I got the heat gun out and put it in the manifold and after 20-30 secs she fired up, but after 5 secs or so she just roared up to full rpm, I turned it off asap and looked at the linkage and so on and cant find anything wrong. I tried starting her again and same thing. Turned her off and opened the pump up and noticed a small hole in the diaphragm so i changed it. Now i cant get the tractor to start? any one any ideas? someone said maybe the governors? Im not sure about them now.

Any fuel at the injectors? I suspect not, in which case the pump rack must be in the stop position, or near it. Check you have the correct diaphram, I have heard of some which look correct, but dont seem to work.

Next, plenty of compression, if the engine has just been rebuilt, that could be the problem, as the rings wont have bedded to the bores yet, and the oil used on assembly will have washed away by now. You can try using the cold start button on the inj pump, and the "Ki gas unit may help. This is a bad starting engine in the cold at the best of times. One other thing,is the decompresser lever still in the run position?

If, when it did start and revved flat out,the fact there is diesel at the injectors suggests the rack in the pump is stuck full open.Would,t prevent it from starting again though.I would suggest checking the rack first and then towing it.

But how did you "turn it off" because if the rack in the pump stuck, I don't think it would stop?

So you bled all the air out of the pipes after fitting the diaphragm in the pump? And opened the injector pump bleeder to get all the air out of that as well? And then you opened all the injector pipes and you have diesel to them all when cranking?
If so and its getting a good spin from the starter you should see smoke?

That's the part I don't get if the pump was stuck I couldn't stop it with the stop lever and would have to block the air intake surely? But when I pulled the stop lever she slowly went down the revs and stopped. I have bleed the tractor 3 times now and apart from the first time there has been no air trapped

OK found your pump, is this it? And you changed the governor diaphragm on the back of the pump with the pipe sticking up to the sky on the top? If so the rack is now stuck in the stop position and should be flat out to start?

Flat out will be full forward towards the front, and the pipe goes to the inlet manifold, pulling the rack back towards the back of the tractor to keep the revs under control.

Yes that's the same pump, the linkage all seems to move OK however and o was for to pull the lever to stop the tractor and it did start after that one more time and again I was fit to pull the lever to stop it but now it won't start.

The rack is in the pump running longways from back to front. The rubber diaphragm controls it using the vacuum from the inlet manifold, (check the butterfly in the manifold is free from stuff). Spring pressure holds the rack flat out and the vacuum must suck the diaphragm back to hold the revs down.
Are you OK with how the diaphragm on the back of the pump controls the rack and therefore starting? Also I notice a small vent beside the steel pipe going to the manifold (towards the front) check its not blocked?

Well if its free you should be OK, as long as its still connected to the rack and its fully towards the front, did you feel soft spring pressure pulling it forward?
Might be worth also just tapping the side of the pump just in case its now stuck in the stop position. They are a bit temperamental with that vacuum type governor control. Wont take you long to check the diaphragm again?

Bottom line if you have a good squirt of diesel at each injector when cranking it should start. If not you will have to investigate the pump further.

Just to double check when you say you changed the pump diaphragm it was the one on the injector pump wasn't it? Not the little lift pump one?

With a hole in the diaphragm, the pump will stay in the full fuel position, but the stop control will still work. With a stuck rack the stop will also be stuck. Another poss problem, are the vacuum lines on the throttle body connected correctly?

Don't think you can mix up the vacuum pipes only one going to the manifold, spring pressure the other way?
But the Fordson Major had two pipes
