Looking into the options and potential energy savings of using a ground heat source pump to supply a continuous flow grain drier with ambient air of 45c, then additional heat from Gas Oil and also chilled air at 3c for grain cooling. Anybody with this system that can give feed back?

Yeah I know of that one and the figures they are branding of 120K a yr but I never totally believe the figures that a salesman give you.. I would be drying a 1/3 of what 3D are drying but it has been suggested I could earn up to 90k from RHA plus the saving on fuel as long as I can utilize some heat use for the rest of the year.

If you're needing warm air and cool air, then surely an air source heat pump could give you both at the same time? Not got the inclination to work through the maths, to know if it is better or not.

Better to use an air source heat pump (or equivalent) cold side to chill the incoming air so the moisture condenses out, then use the heating side to warm it back up again without the moisture. This will be far more effective than using it to heat the air. The reason you heat air when drying is to reduce the relative humidity, not because you want hot air. After drying with hot air you will then need to cool the grain down again for storage. If you dry with dehumidified air then you save on this cost as well. Such systems were on the market about 30 years ago, but I failed to find any references on Google

I'd also hope that you might not need to be taking as many % out as the 3Ds. Fair play to them, they keep the combines going, but some days/nights getting it out of the tank is a slow job.

I missed the open day but will have to swing by for a nosey, without the sales patter.

The soil for the trenches was dry as dust, I imagine it will be more efficient in year 2 when things have settled.

If wet clay soil helps efficiency ours going in at the moment should work well.

Yep, dust less prevalent now. Is yours a calibrate job as well? Will you use it for the dairy, or is at the new place?

Talked to calibrate about 1 for couple of houses, but it was really under the lower end of their scale. The houses are not quite Charlie A sized!

Calibrate as well, It's for the dairy, using the chilled side of it for milk cooling.

We times get desperate them we need to cut within reason also.. The joys of not letting a combine get too behind when cutting a large area.

Will work well if you can utilize it daily, thats my problem of needing massive capacity for 7 weeks then minimal requirment afterward..

What size of Heat pump are you installing?? Any idea of the area needed for the coils??
