Growing Leeks

What is the best timing for applying totril on leeks?
Used some on onions and has fair set them back, presumably not enough leaf wax.can leeks suffer the same?

Is aramo a pretty safe bet, or again is it dependant on leaf wax?

I'm most bothered with amg, chickweed and deadnettle/hemp nettle.

@Stuart J - what was growth stage of onions and what rate of Totril did you use ? Did you have anything in tank mix with Totril ?

What size are your leeks at now ?

I think your agronomist should be able to get it . it is used on peas more commomly , but it does give you an indication of how waxy the leaves are and therefore how tolerant they are (or not) to spray timing

this is from the PGRO in relation to spraying peas

Post-emergence sprays of full rate Basagran (bentazone)

can be applied from 3 nodes of the crop to well-waxed

peas (tested with crystal violet dye).

About 3 leaves, half rate totril, nothing else in tank.

Leeks are also about 3 leaves.

Half rate Totril = 700 ml/ha ? This would be rather hot on onions and leeks at 3 true leaves. I would go with 300-400 ml/ha Totril at 3 true leaves, maybe with a 75-100 ml/ha Starane if chickweed is an issue.

Whats did you seal-up with ? Whats your problem weeds ?

@Oldmacdonald

Both Wing-P and Springbok are safe on transplanted leeks - just make sure the roots are covered with a decent amount of soil.

Would say that that Wing-P is stronger on annual meadow grass and Springbok is stronger if you have a bad groundsel problem.

Are there many farmers growing leek in Britain? What kind of yields are you getting?

This year was my first growing leek, it was a really fun crop to grow with many decisions to make! I got close to 65 tonnes a hectare this year... pretty happy with that but there are still lots of room for improvement!

Would adding some Stomp into Springbok not allow me to cover both angles?

What is there for sealing up leeks after transplanting? Used Wing-P and PDM pre planting, but the planter has disturbed quite a bit of soil.
