Gypsum on high Mag clay?

I probably should have been clearer.
It had 3.5 ton/ha of calcium lime.

This was before I got exploring gypsum etc.
No variable rate.
The extra 0.5 above reccomendations was just to use up full loads

Right, I thought you meant 3.5t/ha of gypsum applied.
Typical application of gypsum would be about 6t/ha on those Mg levels. Could try less and see what effect it has but 5-6t good place to start.

It probably would but gotta walk before you can run. We've had good results at 6t/ha. The most I've seen is 15t/ha but that was an 8 on Mg indices.
