Gypsum sulphur content

Hi all,

I have had a fair amount of land spread with gypsum at 2t/acre this summer. I’m wondering how much I can decrease my sulphur application by? I’m planning on doing some tissue tests come early spring but need to sort the bulk of my plan out now. My agronomist is pushing to apply what I normally would in osr but obviously I don’t want to pay for sulphur I won’t use. Is tissue testing come spring the only way to be accurate?

This is my concern. How much rainfall would be required over winter to enable how much leaching on clay. Maybe not worth the hassle to reduce sulphur input and play it safe

Do you have an analysis of the gypsum? Around 46.5% SO3? 5 t/ha would give more than enough S for a couple of crops but...

There's a fair chance it will have leached down away from the roots so certainly apply some SO3 in early spring to tide it over until it can get hold of the gypsum. Why did you apply it? High magnesium clays soils needing Ca and soil conditioning?

Yes high mag clays and hoping to improve it over time. Trying to eek out as much benefit from it as possible. Will have a read of that link thank you

I would still use some available S with N, maybe a low S product.

Surely there is enough for this crop. I have used Elemental S in autumn and S levels in the crop were perfect in spring.

I use a leaf analysis and as long as your N;S ratio is 8:1 I would think your ok
