My opening address in the EU debate with Sir Peter Kendall. Please don't criticize the construction and grammar as it was prepared at very short notice. Apologies if I don't engage in lengthy discussion - I don't talk or type for a living!

Regards

Nick Adams

Good luck with this, you know what you're up against, don't be put off by the bombastic attitude SPK will take.

This was held last night. I was asked late last week as Farmers for Britain were struggling to find someone. It was a privilege to address probably 300 whose future we are discussing. SPK said it was possibly the largest audience he had addressed and certainly younger than the farmers club. I don't have his notes. We had ten minutes each for opening speeches, well over an hour of questions and debate which brought out many more points and detailed discussion and finally closing statements. The show of hands before was pretty evenly split 3 ways. Encouragingly there were very few don't knows after but there was probably a majority to remain. I thought of some great responses - on my drive home! But then he is a paid professional and I usually only argue with my dog. I think it was a good debate, we have disagreed on most things over the years and our vision for agriculture and experiences are polar opposites.

Although I remain for remain (with reform), I asked the OP @Nick Adams for SPK's notes because I reckon the persuasion of Nick's "grounded" arguments would outshine the politico address. ;):)
Reform is not on the cards dc tried and failed so you had better go for out as after an in vote the eu are going to bum little Britain senseless. reform is not on the cards remember that.

If Boris is PM and the vote is out, it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't go back for a "return to the EEC" discussion and a second referendum, especially if your friend Nicola pushed us for a second Scottish referendum

JP walks away remembering the famous Fawlty Towers' Basil remark after the Waldorf debacle "It's all bottoms to you isn't it"

I think Boris has blown his chance.

May looks a more likely option.

Also just my opinion [emoji2]

I think you can write (y)

I think we are stronger & safer out of the EU

With 65 million people to feed we should have a great & dynamic future.

We have coal oil gas grass grain sugar spuds & our own nukes & greet friends around the globe.

What's not to like?

It's cheaper to import food and the leavers have said so often enough to know what they plan.

The deep mines are all closed.

The nuke power is French.

The nuke missiles are American.

Trump is no friend of ours.

Everyone else adds up to Belgium and the Netherlands combined.

I think that you might find leaving a bit less appealing than you imagine.

A good speech with some good ideas of what we could do after leaving the EU but the big questions is if our government would do anything like that and if the NFU would be any good at getting them to support farming [and by that I don't just mean hand-outs] or if they would just sell us down the river in some poorly thought out trade deals in favours of selling a few cars or their city boy mates and their financial services
If we had a government that would commit to farming and had a track record of doing so and/or we had an NFU and farmers themselves that would stand up to the government then we as farmers would nearly all want to leave

My son attended the evening, his opinion was that the remain speech was very good, and put up a very compelling argument to remain in. He however did feel that there is a high proportion of those who feel that exit is the right course to take.
Of those undecided many said the remain speaker had swayed there feelings towards the remain camp. He still wants out.
