Personally it's been a total sh!t storm , everything from March went tits up , even now it continues to take
Might go on the Wassiel in 2 days , burn a few virgins or whatever they do
The family is in good health, we have food in the fridge and a roof over our heads, we are extremely fortunate when you look at what's going on around the world.
2023 has been a cracking year, if the weather is not taken into account.
All personal perceptions possibly.
Catalogue of events that are mostly out of our control anyhow.
All we can do is make the best of things,
Good or bad.
It’s been a hell of a year with putting in new parlour and then new 150 space cow shed.
Work wise probably my hardest ever but it was a fantastic achievement for us as a family. Financially tough but was always was going to be irrelevant of milk price.
Hopefully 2024 we might start to see a bit more rewards for our troubles.
Can honestly say 2023 has been the worst year of my life, sooner it’s gone the better, but will be looking ahead in a positive way believing life is how you make it.
Baby grandson had to have a bone marrow transplant (14 months old when he had it in april) donated by his brave 6 year old sister fingers crossed its worked up to now he still has other problems so puts this job into perspective you think you have problems with weather etc they nothing in comparison as long as you have your health nothing else really matters heres to a better 2024
Both kids back for xmas. No one in our bunch lost this year. That will do.
Dry farm in a wet year is better than a dry farm in a dry year (2022).
Rain could stop for a few weeks please.
Weather- mixed. Lovely start to the year and then shite from March. 25% plus and counting for annual rainfall.
Farming- mixed (livestock good, crops average). Harvest late resulted in late forage crops going in. But on plus side found 150 acres of winter keep resulting in little need for silage/haylage so might sell some. Lambing was good despite weather. Calving ok, couple annoying losses.
Family- as always a roller coaster. Kids doing well, though youngest might be splitting up with boyfriend next few days (joys of a 22 year old daughter). Biggest issue is probate from mum dying 13 months ago and non farming sibling now very interested in farm business
diversification- new holiday home going great guns and taking to others locally we are well ahead of things. ROI looking good. Caravan bookings back 15% year on year coupled with electric prices quadrupling making it marginal but new power contract looking positive.
health- I seem to be lucky. Rarely feel crook. But gave my wife and myself private healthcare for Christmas. She has a few minor issues but it’s peace of mind as we head towards our 60’s……how the hell did that happen???
Highlights
Drilled SB in Feb
Sold a good proportion of Cereals early at strong prices
Nitrogen prices dropped
Good Cereal yields
Good OSR establishment
Lots of BG grew in stale seedbeds and residuals working well
Lowlights
Break crops are a continual struggle
Drilled 25% of the wheat late
Beans not drilled
Quite a bit of Spraying to do
New machinery prices are crazy
Commodity prices stuck in a trough
It’s just been a miserable end to the year
We have some good projects in the pipeline for ‘24 and the weather can only get better, right ??
Harvest was decent, although quite expensive to grow. But tbh drains have barely stopped running from march and turned into the worst winter ever. Drilled crops mainly written off; those that make it to spring may end up silage; stood water everywhere; structure knackered; damp all over the house; cost of money has sucked up much of last year's profit.
I'm going to guess that harvest 2024 will be the worst financially I've ever had. Looking on the plus side.......great blackgrass control.
23 has been horrendous ,no work since October ,SE for this year is 10k of jobs less than 22 .
Materials prices rise ,customers pockets aren't deep enough .
The covid bubble has burst when everybody was at home ,no traveling costs,no holidays ,everybody had money to burn on house extensions ,gardens ,you name it .
Now with interest rates affecting mortgages , they're watching every penny and there's nothing to spare on non essential landscaping
62 next year, getting too old to be pulling my guts out , feeling the stress .
