They are offering you a 20% discount, when you get the receipt you can still claim the vat back on the price you have paid

Its a 16.67% reduction, not a 20% one. Item on sale before promotion for £120 includes £20 of vat. Take off the VAT element for the VAT Free event, new sale price is £100, so the saving is 20/120*100 = 16.67%. Same % reduction applies if you are VAT registered or not.

You can still get the vat back if you are vat registered.
If it is £120 including vat. £120
less vat = £100
that is the price you pay and if you are vat registered,
£100 - 20% = £83.25p to the nearest 1p
