I have just come across this and wondered how many other cattle keepers are unaware of the latest proposals that Defra are consulting on?

The link below goes to the consultation page so you can fill in your response
Bovine tuberculosis: consultation on proposals to help eradicate the disease in England. - Defra - Citizen Space

A summary of their suggestions
Proposal 1 - extending post movement testing to the edge area
proposal 2 - use of the gamma test in the HRA and edge area
proposal 3 - stop issuing new intensive badger cull licences post 2022
proposal 4 - badger cull licences issued in 2021 and 2022 could be revoked after two years
proposal 5 - reduce the financial commitment required from coal companies
proposal 6 - restrict supplementary badger cull licences to a maximum of two year

3-6 IMO are all to weaken the results the current 4 years intensive culls are getting, moving the goal posts continually and making financial commitments to fund the culls harder to achieve. These need STRONG responses that culls are peer reviewed, scientifically evidenced on 4 years basis (it takes that long to see drops in herd breakdowns) so chopping and changing duration etc will bugger the results and make them look less credible to continue with.

Call for views; If we dont put farmer views across on how these suggestions would impact trade/ herd health/ farmer mental health etc we can't moan if they come into force!
Bovine tuberculosis: call for views on possible future measures to accelerate disease eradication in England - Defra - Citizen Space

It is VITAL cattle keepers respond to these surveys - you can guarantee the wildlife and badger trusts will be encouraging their flunkies to do so, farmers have to put responses in too. Also write to your MPs about it, get it on their radar early, make the comparison between stopping C19 and the hard decisions that have had to be made there to control disease.

Risk to our trade status is also massive - cattle injections could pose a serious issue, and they don't exist yet so stopping culling before there is a viable alternative would scupper their 25 yr eradication goal.

Work in progress.
outline shows
"• evolving the wildlife control policy, by beginning to phase out intensive badger culling in the next few years and gradually replacing this with government-supported badger vaccination and surveillance. Culling would remain an option where epidemiological assessment indicates that it is needed;"

But No questions on replacing with unproven Vaccination !! Some consultation!! Guess I will have to use Other Comments Box.
A complicated hard to use but incomplete consultation in my opinion

Have they learnt nothing from the Covid controls, you have to relly on data, cannot impose dates.

Please encourage everyone to respond. Our vet tells me that there were far more non-farmer/vet responses to the last consultation than from farmers. That makes it look as though we do not care.
There are lots of places where your own thoughts can be put in, after doing the mandatory multiple choice.

Was that on the buffers around badger vaccination areas in cull zones? If so thats just ridiculous. We have got to stop being so apathetic on these things and get loud in the conversation. How can people who have no understanding of TB, cattle, trade etc be having more say than the individuals whose herds are being taken out by this? ARGH

Come on folks get this filled !!!!

And don't hold back.
Farmer funded culls, have cleared up a lot of Defra's creative inertia over the last decade. While vaccination of badgers has had no effect at all on cattle TB in the area, but has now been found to infect a cat with the strain of TB uniquely found in Badger BCG. (Danish strain 1331)

And how very dare that yoosless SofS give media interviews announcing the result of this 'consultation', before he had the berluddy thing in? Talk about rubbing your nose in it... :banghead:

Done. Had the final reactor from our last test removed today - 27 days after reading. Even more frustrating this was an animal in meat withdrawal so she was shot on farm, so that could have been done in the first week if APHA had pulled their fingers out. The two other reactors only went at day 25, again, disgraceful. I made good use of the 'other comments' box at the end.

I am sorry to hear about your issues.
That's disgusting removal time.

If you'd had one with sexed semen within 30 days of calving they would have been at you to "apply" to keep it, yet boot on other foot and it's not an issue!

We had reactors removed before a heavy incalf cow was shot on farm. IMHO meat withhold animals and unable to travel animals should be euthanasia on farm by the vet on reading day.

Sorry you’re in trouble again.
When we left east Leics. 35 years ago, the county was on 3/4 year testing of adults only. cases - nil.
Creative inertia? The reasons for doing buggerall are most inventive.
