Heavy land crop rotations without OSR

I think we ask for trouble growing wheat too close together. It's why I'm putting a fair few eggs in the grass basket. I think my daddy is going towards the wheat / fallow route with some kind of cover in-between .
I’d love to grow more grass, but unless there’s a stewardship payment attached, it’s hard to make it pay , unless your producing real high end stuff for racing yards

Local dairy are having mine. Seemed a wise move as I have no outlet for it this year.
Most around here had a good forage year last season, with grass coming out of their ears. It’s feast or famine unless you can team up with someone. They all want maize here

The trouble is that everybody is trying to grow the stuff for racing yards, me included.
In 2018 i had a merchant from 50 miles away come and buy the lot from me at a really good price.
He knows I have got the same this year, but has other suppliers much closer. So my stack hasn’t moved a bale this season.

The only real pest issues here with canola are aphids & heliothis caterpillars at flowering

can you grow safflower in the UK ?

I believe it's possible, but not sure if commercial. It would fall under the banner of may sown small seeds, so tricky for heavy land.

A fair few weird and wonderful pharmaceutical crops have been tried in the UK, but often they have fallen victim to the "sell them dear seed and a promise of riches" with the latter being conspicuous in their absence.

And with the recession that's about to hit that job's going to be a disaster anyway.

Niche crops are niche for a reason?!

would borage be an option ?

i think it is important what you want to achieve out your break crop,

does it need to make a profit, break even or would a non cash 'profit' that improved the profitability of the rest of the rotation be considered?
