Heifer cubicles

Hi all, just updating some old redundant cow housing for our bulling heifers to go in.

Ages 14-19 months. Put new cubicles in at width of 3ft 3 inch. Got a concrete bed with the curb of 9 inch.

Wasn’t planning on putting mattresses in, was going to try and put a timber along the back and fill up with sand, all on cost.
We will see how we get on and then wost case put mattress in later if it doesn’t work well.

Anyone done this? If so what size timber? The bigger the timer the higher the curb, but more comfort.

Funny you’ve just done heifer cubicles I’m doing something smiliar, going to go for mattresses though just not sure which as there so many to choose from

All the foam mattresses are so similar there really isn’t much difference is there. We’ve got Spinder mattress in our cow set up and they have been in 10 years now, not showing and real signs of wear [emoji106]

I did exactly the same with my pregnant heifers. But bedding with compost.

I tried 2inch and 5 inch. Cows preferred 5inch due to comfort.

How high was your curb before the timber?

I did the same but no bedding. They still lie in it rather than in the sh!t.
