Here it is, the new LandRover Defender replacement for 2020:

And it's made by Ford.

The Bronco debuts in the US in 2020, and is apparently based on the Ranger running gear.

Test mule / 'Baja 1000' race, 2019 entry. Looks strangely familiar...

No prices, no talk of it coming to Europe let alone in RHD, but in 'commercial' spec it could be an absolute winner if Ford priced it to sell and focused it at the utility and ag markets. The 5 door variant looks a bit Hummer like, if some of the leaked drawings are anything to go by.

The 'Bronco R' race variant (top pic, in red) was supposedly built as a test mule, and is due to compete in the Baja 1000 race later in November. Check the video.

As for the 'real' new Defender: the less said the better.

I hope we get this new Bronco, I think it looks ace, removable doors and roof too. It's worth remembering that although based on the Ranger, the US Ranger is completely different to what the rest of the world gets, so a UK version wouldn't be a simple job. I fear we may get what they are calling the 'Baby Bronco', a soft-roader based on the Focus

Apparently they are made in 5 different factories around the world, so you'd think that the design would be pretty much standardised, with a few exceptions. Thailand makes the mighty Raptor version with a 210hp 2L twin turbo diesel, while the poor Americans have to get by with a base model spec 2.3L 270hp EcoBoost Mustang engine. I hope that Ford see the light and make the Bronco in RHD in a commercial 'Tonka' spec for the UK.

As for the baby Bronco, that would probably step on the toes of the Kuga and Edge in Europe.

The US Ranger is hardly any different to the South African version we get. Americans love to think that it is substantially different but it really isn't and they are now realising this. They don't get the Diesel engine of course.

There are indeed going to be two Bronco. The 'baby' Bronco has already been announced and it is based on the US 2020 Ford Escape small SUV.
The 'big' Bronco will be sold from 2021 and its design will not be revealed for a few months yet. It is already known that there will be a short and long wheelbase version and that it will compete with the Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender.

The Edge is no more. The last Edge imports to the UK are here or in shipment from Canada. Does that mean that it might be replaced by the baby Bronco? It would be nice to think so.

Ford Broncos have been around since at least the 80’s
They were always based on the F - series of vehicles
During the 90’s I always wanted one, with the 351 V8 & a manual transmission, but I outgrew that obsession. A new one with a decent diesel would still get my attention though . . .
It’s what OJ Simpson drove in his famous police “chase”

is this “new” Bronco going to be based on the Ranger that you get in the UK ( same as ours ) or the larger F series vehicles like they used to be ?

It’s reported to be based on the T6 Ranger architecture (current shape), but will have the 2.3L Ecoboost petrol in the US. A ‘rest of world’ model would probably have a 2L diesel in single or twin Turbo, same as the Ranger.
Interestingly, it was Ford Australia that did the design work on the Ranger Raptor. Shame it falls on the wrong side of the UK’s commercial pickup tax regulations.

I think Ford Australia did a lot of work on the Ranger full stop . . .
That's what they claim anyway

err, 3.2 diesel is most common Ranger engine here, but we do get the 2.2 ? diesel or whatever the smaller one is ?

The 3.2L 5 cylinder (200bhp) is still available in the new shape 2019 Ranger that’s just hit the UK (for how long) but they’re selling it alongside the 2.0L in single (something like 178bhp) and twin Turbo (213bhp) as used in the Raptor, significantly better mpg apparently. The new 10 speed auto is only available with the 2L, the ‘new’ 3.2 uses the old 6 speed.
Worst of all, the rumours (came from someone at Ford) that the new Ranger was coming with a galvanised chassis has turned out not to be true. You’d think after all the trouble they’ve had with serious rust bubbling on 6 month old chassis they’d do something about it with the new shape ?

Ford has not built a Bronco for over 20 years. The new Big Bronco is going to be based on the T6 Ranger or its VW/Ford successor. Probably the T6. The Raptor's new coil sprung rear axle may be an indicator for the Bronco's suspension system.
