Please can I have your suggestions, for a GOOD QUALITY compressor, that will be capable of driving a 1/2" air gun/ratchet, AND I wish to be able to lift the compressor in and out of the back of my pickup. The compressor in an ideal world needs to be engine driven so it is completely mobile. Any suggestions welcome .

If light weight/good portability and high power-to-weight that are your prime considerations, then I would be looking at a machine that has the following construction:
- direct driven pump (thought these will mostly be electric drive, rather than petrol)
- an all alloy crankcase and heads
- v-twin piston setup
- more than likely oil-free lubrication (at the cost of ultimate durability)
- possibly a tank built-in as part of the frame (but at the cost of capacity)

The question is how much weight are you prepared to lift every day/how many times a day in and out of the pickup versus how much capacity do you need/are willing to wait for the compressor to 'catch up'.

Most lightweight italian built compressors are quite good quality wise. These are often rebadged by the bigger brands.

There is no solution. Any of the ones you could lift, like Machine Mart, Sealey, Axmister etc etc are a combination of Chinese and Italian components and do not qualify as 'Good Quality.' I've used them for years and they are just fine, but I'm sticking rigidly to your req's.

Anything 'good quality' will have a single cylinder diesel engine belt driving a piston pump and you will not be able to lift it into your pick-up. (by hand) Accordingly you need to have a rethink and decide how you wish to compromise.

I think a good s/h Ingersoll Rand towable compressor might be the answer, good for blowing of the combine and radiators as well as powering air tools, main problem where to find one that is not worn out,my budget is around a £1000.

How much airflow do you actually need? Your OP indicated that you would be lifting it in and out of a pickup, akin to a light site compressor, which is a COMPLETELY different beast to a TOWED compressor?

I reckon your budget should be at least double maybe treble what you are currently proposing, for a decent unit that does not have too many hours. Would stick with a well known brand, with good spares availability like Ingersoll Rand or Atlas Copco.

You'll be looking for a hell of a long time to get a decent one for 1K. It took me three years to find a decent Atlas Copco two tool machine for my sandblasting. 99% of everything for sale is just total junk and destined for the export market. Spares for Atlas Copco screw compressors are stupid money! I even had one very honest ebay trader telling me over the phone that I should not bid for anything he sells as it's all for export & total crap!

You don't want to use a road towable compressor to drive a little 1/2" ratchet gun, the noise will drive you mad :-(
