High Protein Silage - Would this work?

I've been thinking about how to get extra protein(soya) into my ewes pre lambing. These ewes are wintered on swedes with silage offered as a bit of roughage. With the small quantities of silage being eaten each day it isn't practical to add protein to do a TMR and keep it fresh. So my question is if I had a way of adding soya to the fresh grass, could I produce high protein silage bales containing say 10% soya or would the fermentation be a disaster and be left with a rotten mess?

I've seen soya added to pit silage. The man was mixing beet, soya, grass, and beet pulp to the mix. He had done it several years so obviously happy.

It was a way for him to bring a winters left over beet into the next year

I've seen soya put on the swath before baling. It looked like soya in the silage when the bales were being fed in march and the guy doing it has done it again. Not sure how much they were putting in each bale.

10% soya in a silage bale would need about 50kg per bale. I don't know the current price of soya, but I can't imagine it would be a cheap way of upping protein. I'd be lieing awake at night worrying about rats wrecking a bale.:nailbiting:

I'd sooner offer liquid feed to achieve the same, or pour some over the bale when you put it out, if you don't like the idea of ad -lib feeders. Given your location, what about pot ale syrup poured on the bale?:scratchhead:
