they charge for handling large amount s of cash as well man and so do secure transport the above is just the wind n pish conspiracy theory idiot’s waffle on about .

It's no conspiracy theory. There's the transaction fees, the merchant account fees, the service charges, and the authorisation fees. Money out of people's pockets and into the coffers of the banks and payment processors drip by drip.

I can't think of a single reason to get $1000 cash from an ATM, very, very rarely do I ever go to the bank, I don't need to.
It can still be got but you have to take lots of transactions out of the atm, we’re limited to £300, which makes sense for security reasons, however if I’ve £10000 in my account I think I should have access to that as cash if I so wish.
The cash lovers seem to be able to manage it though, I do keep asking how they get it.
Much easier to use a card than cash here so I'd say that gives me more freedom to spend.
Theoretically all kinds of things can be prevented or go wrong.
Theoretically anything can happen but life’s about weighting the odds in favour of success, we can’t control everything, but getting rid of cash is a step in the wrong direction, handing control of our finances to those outwith our sphere of influence.

I pay 0.55% on paying cash into my business bank account. I'd be paying multiples of that if I took payment by card. There's also a big benefit of not taking credit cards as well: No dodgy buggers trying to do you over under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act...

Cash is a free means of exchange, with no intermediaries required as is barter. Cheques, credit cards and BACS etc are not free means of exchange in two ways. Firstly as every body knows a percentage is charged by the operator of the system and secondly the ability to use that system may be withdrawn at any time for whatever reason by the operator. By using cashless payments you are gradually weakening your own independence (power). Cashless systems offer convenience and that always comes at a price. Convenience can lead to dependance and dependance can lead to abuse. That does not happen much or at all in a high trust society, but from where I am it looks like we are moving steadily and slowly towards a low trust society and then it will follow as sure as night follows day. Many of us grew up in an era of higher trust and therefore are blinded by our experience to the possibility that we are moving toward a dystopian future. The conveniences we currently enjoy are just to tempting. The "well it doesn't bother me ....." comments are the predictable and logical response to a gradually diminishing level of trust in society. It will bother someone when it impacts them and then it may be too late.

It was observed by a well known thinker of his day (Chesterton if you are interested), something to the effect that, " a government fears most a real peasant majority, for the peasant dines on his own mutton and turnips and drinks his own beer and fears nobody for he is the true independent man and a government are terrified of a country of independent men"

You don’t have to pay cash into a bank, you can physically hold it yourself.

FIL's funeral week last Sat , donations were for McMillan nurses and RNLI ....very little donated , reason was very few have cash on them now and even less use cheques .
At my mother's funeral 20 odd yrs ago the donations totalled over £900 !

...the demise of cash is not altogether a good thing !

Is it no longer usual to make sure you have some cash on you when you head out to a funeral? :(

As for control and spying on people it amazes me folk think they are so specail anyone would want to spy on them 😂 😂.
It’s not about the individual, it’s about influencing the population as a whole. It’s about nudging in certain directions (eg away from meat) and seeing if those nudges are being effective. Tracking spending generates that raw information and spending trends can be seen which will show the nudges to be effective or not.

It’s not a theory, the intended nudges away from meat consumption, for example, are in the public domain in the WWF Basket document, which outlines all the commitments the big retailers have signed up to and aim to have implemented by 2030.

Individually, no one is special enough to be “spied upon”, but collectively the footfall thru major UK grocery stores on a Saturday morning is.

Surely it would be better to turn it into gold or something useful. Come the end of the world the Bank of England might not be around to maintain the value of notes. Still you can burn them to heat your beans.

Who'd want gold in that situation? You'd want something useful that would double as currency - 12 bore shotgun cartridges, 25 year old copies of Combat & Survival, Fray Bentos pies (one of those in a rugby sock can also double as a melee weapon), and niche German grot mags.
