How lovely and you don't see many about. I've several beltie breeding friends who like Duns, I always fear having any as I've red genetics in my herd(s) and there's a risk of washed out apricot offspring
We’ve had a few , always got them from a chap on the Wirral
Had blacks and belted before as well.
Always crossed with a whitebred shorthorn bull, hence the little shorthorn calf in the pic

I have the opportunity of some fenced and watered grazing FOC by a country house hotel. They are adamant they must be
photogenic breed that the guests can enjoy looking at as well as tasting good on the plate.
They are especially keen on Highland cattle or Belted Galloways.

Does anyone have experience of these breeds? Are they docile enough? Do they take forever to finish? Where can I even source them? I assume they can be outwintered easily enough? Will they get far too fat in a summer in Hampshire?
The hotelier probably read the article in one of the glossies some years ago describing Belties as “parkland furniture”. For that purpose I think they are the best, and they are naturally polled, hardy, and very low maintenance. Personally my blood runs cold when close to any animal with horns. There is a risk of injury, they are harder to transport, and seem to need specialist gear to handle them. I suspect the hotelier will not want dairy crosses with white on their faces / feet, or obvious mismarks. The hotelier may require full belts even if a breeder would reject them as pedigrees. They probably need to look like pedigrees even though they are not. Most breeders like us do a decent trade in bullocks and mismarked heifers for farm shops that would look great next to a hotel. Don’t worry about finishing, we are at 90ft on modern leys and they just need managed. Keep plenty of grass in front of them. We do not restrict the diet of growers.
Temperaments vary. Mostly it’s calm handlers / calm cattle.
Try a classified ad on the Belted Galloway web site, the breed is getting more popular and there are bound to be sources of bullocks near you. Or if you need an artic load distance issues are less important.

Currently got 56 highlands inc young stock. They are docile and can be very friendly & easy to handle the more time you put into /spend time with them. We don’t keep them for meat but 3 years they’re finished they aren’t the type of animal to be pushed intensively to get them finished. There’s quite a few for sale if you look on places like sell my livestock, highland cattle society etc. We out winter all of ours, don’t get me wrong this winter they have made a bit of mess where they’ve been coming in & out of sheds or gateways etc but that’s easily sorted & hasn’t really ever been an issue before. They shouldn’t get too fat in a summer, ours are on grass which is probably way too good for highlands but they’ll tend to eat any rubbish & hedges before they start to touch the grass

I won the Supreme Any Other Native with a Riggit Bull at Royal Norfolk in 2019 and did well with some heifers

Don’t show that much as the time locked in to these sites is a lot and I also worry about health risks

Always happy to show folks around . If your Daughter fancies a trip out of London the cattle on various no public access reserves on the Wast coast would be a super day out
Thanks very much, I will convey your very kind offer to her when she is over here next.
