I got a couple of saddleback pigs for Xmas. What’s the best home made ration for them? Don’t want to keep feeding grower pellets as their too expensive and will make the pigs too fat. Cheers.

This will be a really boring answer, but it is a public forum.

Your best bet is to ask around the feed industry for a price on half a tonne or a bit less of finisher ration in bags, my pigs need about 200kg each to get from weaner weight (20Kg) to finished, Saddleback, particularly if kept free range will need a lot more.

A Nutritionist would draw you up a proper ration for home milling, if you have the facilities, licences from Trading Standards etc and have had your mixing facilities inspected. Then he or she will sell you some mineral balancer to go with the small amount of Soya that you will need to buy too.

What ever you do, please don't be tempted to feed kitchen waste due to the extremely high risk of decimating the UK pig industry with a nasty imported disease which would immediately cause loss of the export business and destruction of many pigs and pig farmers here.

Sorry to be so dull but experience has shown that Googling anything like your post title by someone less knowledgable could end up persuading someone that the wrong way is the correct way.

We feed our OSBs sow nuts rather than a grower feed. May be cheaper than grower feed. If I’m careful, they don’t get too fat, but they’ll never be lean like a modern commercial.

ditto, we feed all sow here. we're free range so the bigger nuts don't get lost so easy. I'm careful with rations during the life stages (over the top/ad-lib up to 3-4 months and then strict following that) and the butcher has been impressed given the rare breeds we keep

Ours get whatever is going spare or cheap! Whole Barley, Lamb nuts, ewe nuts, wheat sweepings, cleanings from seed cleaning. I think the whole idea of home kill pigs is they'll use up anything and convert it to sausages. Picking up ours tomorrow...
