Has anyone any tips on how to break up the pellets in bags tidy ? Was set like concrete in ours this time, possibly effected it’s effectiveness as protein levels well down after analysis

If the pellets are stuck together they have got moisture in to do that and the moisture reacts the home and dry and produced ammonia so you have lost the product that produced the extra proton ,ie amonia.

Mine was hard but would break up nicely after dropping on the floor a few times. But our feed rep sent a sample away and came back at 10% protein, I don’t believe that one bit. Spending around 3k on the stuff to only come out at 10%?!

Has your quest yielded positive results.
Are there differences between younger beasts and older?
Have you made a chart of your efforts.
Gut health is starting to come into the fore in ‘umans so animals should not be ignored. We eat them ( I get stick for not eating meat at every meal) but I’m sure you know where I’m coming from.
IMO this is an important if slightly overlooked side of farming as buying bulk food is just a press of a button or ‘phone call.

Was bottom half of pallets, was already halfway through processing so couldn’t really stop, assumed breaking it up would have been fine but questioning it now I’ve had analysis.

I’ve broken hard (over yeared) bags up before now and had a good result.

What moisture % was the grain? Lots of very dry grain this year (obviously), which will effect the process unless you add water. The first bit (5t) I did this year didn’t react properly, but it was very dry. I added water for the rest and it’s worked ok.
The last lot I did was the remainder of a pallet of pellets I had in 2020, which had gone lumpy. I ended up mixing in c.3t batches on the floor with a telehandler, having dropped the bags out of the bucket 18’ onto a concrete floor a couple of times, then breaking up the small lumps under foot. Still worked ok.👍

Added water and was 19% moisture when done. All same as last year but 2% less protein :banghead:

Have you got any of the untreated grain left? If so, FiveF have previously done a ‘before & after’ test for me. Might be worth a phone call?
The untreated grain can vary significantly between seasons I think, as I had an untreated sample of Spring Barley that came back at 11.8% CP, when ‘average’ book values are nearer 10% iirc.

sorry I'm not entirely with you?

was that the pellet or treats end product?

can't have worked then...protein is generally measured by testing the nitrogen content then multiplying by 6.25...generally barley is about 10% protein(assumed n of 1.6)....lowest n of barley I've ever encountered was 1.2 giving pre treated protein of circa 8% but barley can also get upto 12.5% unaided

very strange
Yes I’m very unconvinced, think I’ll phone home and dry and have a chat about it

so....I purchased 1.25t in Aug 2020...still got some left as I mix up in small batches...it's therefore a bit of a stretch to hope it is still 100% but seems to be still OK

it's provided all the protein I've needed since buying for circa 200 ewes and finishing bulk of lambs...so really I think it is worth it

I've not had any problems really with acidosis until this year...but ,in one of the many moments of stress,I tipped some triticale on the barley heap at harvest...I think this may be 'hotting it up'

I wish they sold it in 1/2 t pallets really
