Horse stable

Ok it seems like theres no end to it but the horse now needs a stable as well as a field shelter.

Wife wants a 36 x 12 stable and tack room ajoined but its only for one big proper horse and the companion pony. I don't mind what we do but the thinking is to stick in the field on a skid so I can pull it about if needed.

Been quoted about £3k for this sort of thing but is this definitely the best way of doing a stable? ie keeping it in the field (it suits me as its away from the yard) also seems mighty big for two horses but I expect a smaller one isn't much cheaper - do these wooden stables last long?

Yes they do last well if looked after, need treating every year, definitely need kick boards inside, if you use onduline roofing it needs under boarding.

But re the pulling it about, to try to escape planning I expect, what about electricity supply and water.?
Also unless it is on very well drained ground, the continual in and out will soon turn the area to a bog.

3 k is VERY cheap for a building of that size, I would be wary of construction.

Do you think pulling it about is a waste of time? Not really thought about leccy and water yet. Treat with what every year?

Yes, it is, unless you need to to try to get around planning.

I use Bartoline creocote(sp) on mine, some years it has had 2 coats weather permitting.
A stable without electricity is useless, you need to think of out of hours use/vet emergencies.

Mine was only 24x12 and was 1700 about 8 years ago now, they have increased in price substantially. I added kick boards and opted(thankfully) for under boarding. As for putting it on skids, which they do give the option for, you would struggle to tow it on anything but very level, very very dry ground.
It cam in at about 2k all together and has been put up, taken down and moved several times, it is very well made, be wary not all are the same quality.

Hi,

Our external stable with roof is 24ftx12ft all galvanized steel, split into two, one can be a full tack room front.
These are £4k without delivery and VAT, these can be seen on the GHE website.

Many Thanks

Kind Regards

I'd be worried about the tack room being with this stand alone stable. I'm not going to comment on the construction as this is a minefield:whistle: except to say that it never stops.......
Tack theft is something to beware of and a building in a field is vulnerable, just as long as you are aware of this & saddles cost some, plus the heartache of the theft.
Have a look at Jane & Stewart Myers' Equicentral system before you start with building anything as this may change you or your wifes train of thought on keeping horses in stables for most of a year.(y)

Don't bother with the onduline roofy stuff it's crap. Max 5 years.
Put a proper shed up. You'll need 2 stables and a tack room, minimum.

Would agree with this if it is not underboarded.
Mine has been on, building been up about 8 years now, and has been moved 3 times, but sheets still good.

However a friend had a quite expensive block built, and her roof was not underboarded, the sheets just collapsed within around 4-5 years, there is a fair amount of heating and cooling going on in a stable, expect it is this that causes them to collapse, most go for it because it does not drip condensation, they always start to collapse above where the horse stands to say eat its net, so am assuming it is just the moisture inside and constant heating cooling which ruins it?
