Just an observation last night as driving home.
Lot of horse paddocks on rough ground. At the moment lot I went past are just muddy bogs. Some right against the river. (if was cattle then would be hell to pay...)
Nothing against horses, but surely would be better covering the pony paddocks in wild flowers, trees and wild bird cover than arable land..?

Just let the fields re-wild to docks and ragwort.

The ignorance of animal management in the general population is simply appalling. I consider myself a beginner with horses (don't ride and only been at it a dozen or so years) and I've always thought the knowledge about dogs in the general population very bad but the world of horses is ten times worse.

Going forward does anyone think that any of the non essential animals like Horses, Camelids, Donkeys etc & cats will be priced out of regular ownership or taxed to the point of non ownership in the drive to minimise Methane, improve diversity, improve wildlife?
What a sad third world country we have become. If people succumb to pressure from defra and others then they will of course price ownership of " any animal" out of existence.Vets & farriers are just the thin end of the wedge. How restricting ownership of animals will improve wildlife is utter bullocks.

What I want to know is, the damned things have to be housed, rugged, clipped, fed special diets, mustn't go near a speck of dust, have to be attended by an entourage of people dressed in Dubarry; how do they survive in the wild, like in Yellowstone, etc?
Genetics, most of our equines have some arab equine blood. The wild horses in USA have not had their lineage diluted, and are very capable of happily surviving in the wild without mans intervention.

About 800 thousand at the moment, down from 1.2mil in 2008 just before the financial crash. Numbers dropping quickly too.
