I'm going to do the lights up on a couple of grain trailers, I want to be legit and they have no amber marker lights or front corner red/white lights on them. Am I right thinking that they have to have a white light on each front corner? How many amber lights do I need along the sides?

Thanks in advance for any help

got a 18 year old AS marston that has 2 amber marker lights each side attached to the body and front corner red/white lights attached to chassis , hope this helps

not sure on your length but white on the front as near to edge as is practicable 2 to 3 down side depends on length id put 3 down for piece of mind and a red rear as fronts plus your usual statutory lights ive also found a side repeater near the middle of the trailer helps concentrate drivers minds when contemplating an over take if your turning right

Side Marker Lamps
Side marker lamps must be fitted to certain vehicles or combination of vehicles, and must be lit when such vehicles are used on the road between sunset and sunrise, or during daylight hours in poor visibility

These fall into two categories:

  • Vehicles determined by length, ie:
    • more than 18.3m (a vehicle or combination of vehicles)
    • more than 12.2m up to 18.3m (a combination of vehicles)
    • in excess of 9.15m and up to 12.2m.
  • Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1991 and trailers made on or after 1 October 1990 if over 6m long.
Exceptions
Side marker lamps are not required on:

  • vehicles having a maximum speed not exceeding 25mph
  • incomplete vehicles or trailers going to a works for completion or to a place where they are to be stored or displayed for sale
  • agricultural vehicles or works trailers
.

Amber lights are a little vague, depends on the trailer and how practical it is, but one every 1.5M starting from your red/white marker light is a good guide

So 2 per side on a 10 t and 3 on a 14t

According to the FTA book of transport law you do need them, although @Sids link above indicates differently. It is worth noting the but in Sid’s link in bold about maximum speed - that is vehicles LIMITED to 25mph not necessarily driven at 25mph.

If you fit then, do it to HGV spec as you’re right then, whatever the interpretation of the roadside inspector.

The first pic is exemptions from requirements, the second is the spec for side marker lamps, both from the FTA.

Thanks for the replies, I have an Marston Ace trailer of similar age as dickie boy and all it has is amber reflectors on the sides, we have a 2006 NC with 2 amber markers and front corner side lights.

probably do it properly with 2 or 3 down the side but was a bit unsure as the legalities
