just been looking round a few dealers web sites for a massey of 170_200hp,there are a few at 7_8_9 thousand hours tidy looking but the question is are they past there best and ready to land the new owner with large repair bills or will they run in to the teens with just normal wear and tear been looking at 6400 and8200 what are youre thoughts

IMO 5000 hrs is plenty, despite much pooh- poohing on here. Article in the FW a few weeks ago from one chap who isn't keen on running Fendts much longer than 4000hrs. Don't know much about the massey's in question, but I assume it's the same for all makes.*

* Sits back and waits for it to kick off.:D

Only on the modern stuff, I had a 956 and a 1255 that had done over 15000 hours each and a good friend has a Fendt with over 12k on it..............

the the stuff weave been looking at looks like they have done half the hours modern tractors don't seem to age bad but its what you cant see inside that costs.mending stuff is no problem as I do all my own work but I don't want to be .un reliable and missing out when the weathers good .

Your right just changing fendt here at 6500hrs but should have gone at 4 to 5 as last 2000 hrs has cost us a bit in tyres breakdowns and it is worth a lot less in p/x

Personally I couldn't think of a worst tractor to take to high hours than a Massey 64 series. I had a new 6465 and it left here with around 3000 hours as it cost more than 10k in repairs in the previous 500hrs. It was a early dyna 6 and changed me from Massey since but maybes mine was just a bad one.

part of the reason for looking at 6400 tractors is we have a 6465 dyna 6 and its been no bother apart from a radiator and bottom of clutch switch in the 2000 hours we have had it.its now over 6500 hours and drives like a new tractor .maybe we have been lucky

I know of a few 6480s here in Derbyshire on dairy farms that are worked hard and have not heard any major problems,1000 hours or more a year.

that's what makes them attractive .only needed for 300/400 hours /year but would need to work hard when needed

The probability of it ending in a massive and pricey repair is not high but possible. It depends how bad a taste it leaves with you vs depreciation etc and how youll blame any breakdown on its hours. Buy lower hours and you.will get.more depreciation anyway.

Everything is repairable. You only need to read Classic tractor to see how people are willing to spend doing up on old tractors and have total confidence in them

Make sure you dont over pay, leave a few grand for the unexpected, some dealers will give you 6 months warranty, if they dont walk away.
