How many years before all SFI schemes scrapped.

If the above has already been asked I apologise.
How long before those advisers to DEFRA ( or whatever it’s called nowadays) have a light bulb moment and suddenly realise “ oh why are the tonnage’s of “x,y,z, etc crops produced in the UK dropping so rapidly each year”? Expensive inquiry into the reason this is happening, conclusion “farmers aren’t growing as many ha’s of combinable crops as more lucrative to participate in SFI schemes that DEFRA introduced” :banghead: :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

If it all goes pear shaped as regards food production/security it will all be the farmers fault just as farmers are still blamed to this day for ripping hedges out or ploughing up ancient meadows in the now distant past yet was government policy at the time

These politicians should try flying as they spout such rubbish, the UK has more habitat rich hedgerows than any other country in the world, try flying over Europe looking for hedgerows.

Anyone know what the current takeup of SFI is against the 70% target? Will Janet Hughes receive her Damehood before it all goes pop?
@Abi Kay A FOI request perhaps?
If the takeup is no where near target the civil service will be looking for ways to regain the control over farmland that they have lost as SFI has not replaced BPS in takeup. That will bring forward any change, it will not be politically led unless the supermarket cartel need home grown food production to be ramped up because they cannot make enough profit by importing food.

It will be amended over time such that the only land use to receive an area payment will be PP. There will be attractive options for the arable farmer such as watercourse protection, bio-diverse margins/hedgerows.
how will they pay for margins if not by area ?

At some point the 'success' of SFI is going to have to be measured and hopefully it will be done with some kind of metrics that reflect sustainability.
Sustainable farming can only be measured as a inputs vs outputs sum.
The current SFI will be burning more fossil fuels for a reduced output so will have to be considerably changed or die as a failure.

I expect this will happen after 2030, when they will have met their nature/ biodiversity targets of classifying 1.5 million acres as reserved for nature [ achieving our legally binding targets to halt species loss and protect 30% land for nature by 2030], off the back of SFI applicants.

Thats the 25% cap to save them money 😂

think they'll introduce a maximum cap on claims.....marginalising the whole 'subsidy pony' and saving cash

True.

SFI will be scaled back when there isn't enough money in the pot to pay for it, not because of food security concerns.

I can see the government wanting to fund SFI from taxes on polluters (or from selling credits to polluters), rather than directly from the taxpayers' pocket.
