How much HP do you really need?

So, today my neighbour took deliver of a new Fendt 1050, and keen to show it off he brought it over for me to have a look.

That got me thinking, what benefits does having 500bhp have? My 8330 is tuned up to 350bhp, pulls my 8m Mounted Tine drill comfortably along with my Vaderstad Tempo R. No trouble with the 8m discs we have for cultivating, or the 5 fur plough we use on the odd occasion.

Even our 4220 we have can do most of the jobs we ask it to do.

Just my two cents wondering what other thoughts and theories other have.

Surely depends what hes trying to pull with it? If its the same kit as your have then fair enough it might be overkill, if its a 10 furrow plough or 12m drill etc then maybe 500hp is justifiable?

We had a 15m Amazone Condor on Demo last year, which our 8330 pulled with ease. I believe his drill is 10m at best. Perhaps he has a larger plough than us, but still would think it’s overkill.

Remember using a 10’ spring tine cultivator in the 1970’s, quite easily handled by our 45hp Massey 135.
We bought another tractor, this time a 60hp 165 and tried it on the same spring tine. It pulled it as though nothing was hitched up, such was the unbelievable difference in power. Hard for most people to understand today!

Can’t see why any of you need more than 60hp.
