How to get into auctioneering.

Hi all

I’m a 24 year old keen enthusiastic and very social lad.
Have been in cattle procurement roles before, buying large numbers of cattle for finishers/right down to calf rearers.
I have always wanted to be a auctioneer and saw cattle procurement a easy way to get into the industry.
Are there company’s that take on trainees regularly?

wouldn’t want to go down the start as a drover route and start from the bottom. (As I’ve already done that to a degree) this doesn’t mean that I want to be given a free chance by any means.

area/pay really doesn’t bother me as long as there’s a opportunity.

look forward to wisdom and advice from this forum 👍

Quite a few auctioneers been looking for young trainees,. Keep an eye on farmers weekly and farmers guardian pages .
You say area and pay doesn't really matter ...but it does .
Anyone giving an opportunity and training to a young budding auctioneer will want to know that you will settle in the area and not bugger off once training is gained .
For a start write to your local auctioneers putting yourself forward .
Lots want to gecome an auctioneer ...but it's not lots that can do it .
Livestock auctioneering is completely different to any other auctioneering .

.....but good luck 👍👍

You'll need to have a thick skin I would think, always looks to me like you can please the buyers or the sellers, but hard to please both!! And good mental maths!!
Good luck!

Can you count backwards, without anybody noticing :scratchhead:

By that I mean, something like....

"Cracking pen of lambs here, 120?...fifteen then?......ten? ten?..ten and away, ten, ten half, ten half, hundred and eleven, one eleven, one eleven, one eleven, one eleven, one hundred, one hundred, one hundred, one o' one, sold 🪒

There's a lot of auctioneers had to do that these last few days.

A good auctioneer is a wonderful thing to behold, a bad one is nothing short painful to endure.

Best of luck 👍

Area isn’t a problem as I’d happily relocate for the right opportunity,

can you recall any specific firms that offer trainee roles. Might be worth a email 👌

Good on you

Firstly contact Chris (Dodds) at Livestock Auctioneers Association

Secondly contact Harper about the LAA grad scheme (maybe you can find a sponsor employer / apprenticeship)

Thirdly personally write and then follow up call every major auction house in the Country. It will take tact and tenacity as they are busy people. If it was me, I'd want to go with the best auctioneers in the country and start as you are doing from the bottom. It might lead to a glass ceiling after a while but you'll be networking the whole time too.

Listen to what the many folks tell you as there is a chasm of difference between a good employer and a good farmer / auctioneer / business etc . Hopefully you will get to marry the two (and the biggest isn't always the most beautiful either)

Finally all the best with your endeavours ; if you approach things right on here and with auction houses you'll be appreciated and go far

Awaiting reply from Mr Dodds, see what comes of that.

I’ve spent a lot of time in markets being a buyer and completely agree with you…

Tin hats on! Who are the best auctioneers in the country?!

Be prepared to be in charge of selling 'artifacts' (junk) on a Saturday morning for a few years too.
Standing in the rostrum, behind the auctioneer, for a long time, when trade's bad will also be a bit of an education.

Some good auctioneers even have letters behind their name but a lot of good livestock ones just have a battered bit of stick (with varying degrees of tape round it) in their hand.

Sell live and thrive 👍
