How to make the most of every opportunity..............

A lot of PR people don't understand the complexity of agriculture and find it terrifying to market / sell / defend / promote. It's hard to be accepted in the agri circles unless you come from a serious farming background and it's hard to be taken seriously outside agri community unless you have some credible blue chip experience. That's just my opinion...! However, yes, if there was someone who could grasp all sides, then that would be fantastic for agriculture and bridging the town v country, consumer v producer, sustainability v consumption & convenience divide.

There was a bit on the telly tonight about how they make skimmed milk. The guy thought it was from a special cow, and when he phoned round for further information, the help lines did not know either. He was asking how they can make it to the right percentage fat, not realising they take the fat out, then add a bit back. Words fail me...

There's a serious flaw in food education and "clever" labelling doesn't help the end consumer to make a well rounded decision. Heavy marketing and promotional offers in supermarkets does drive people to go for offers over asking where food comes from and therefore more sensitive to price over product. Supermarket prices here are also quite high and I know my weekly shop here in £stg is the same as I was spending in Ireland in € - therefore approx 15 - 20% more expensive here.

I started my Uni education in Birmingham in the College of Food and quite a few people there had NO understanding of where food actually comes from - really shocked me. I didn't grow up on a farm rather the edge of Dublin city and amongst my peers in MVF, I'm definitely more "townie" than they are. But living in a more rural area now, food production is de-sensitised and it is part of life, part of the community and is probably talked about more often which is much better for a healthy relationship with food and its production.

Right, as you can probably tell from above, this is a topic that you could get me ranting about! So, with that, I'm off to hit the hay and I'll check back in tomorrow!! Night all.
