Worst part of growing rye is combining it,.we closed our concave up and speeded the rotors up to 950. On a lexon 750.

Great crop.... but concerning in a wet time

Would completely agree … potential to do damage to a combine too … despite great yields , I don’t think I’ll grow it again ! A bit disappointing as it’s was new option to me … In a wet time it would be some job to dry the straw .. nightmare ..we have had to drive one wheel on the straw for it to go into the Baler

On our CR we are running wide concaves and high rotor speed, it's threshing no bother.
After having substantial acreages since 2016 I can say that yes there is potential to do damage so this year I was very patient before we started and still we choked the combine. needless to say we had to wait 2 days for a replacement shaft, but I just think that choke was the straw that broke the camels back IYSWIM.
Today we are back cutting some stuff will be 4.5 foot high, but doing 9.5 to 10 on ground that would hardly do that as a first wheat never mind a 3rd cereal. I would say that keeping the N rate down (I think I might cut it donw to 135 next season) and plenty pgr and patience help a lot. The straw is quite valuable for us. We've tried and tried with winter barley over the years as well but it's very inconsistent in yield performance, the tall hybrids were as bad to cut as some of this rye is.
Why are so many people growing rye this year anyway?

The reason I grew it was a secondary option to other cereals and it’s potential yield , which was realised, thankfully..I had 120 units N on and it stood but was tall and I used a robust growth program …. Would need much more robust I feel ..what worries me is a wet summer which are common enough here !!!…If I waited till it was rotten ripe and weather broke it could be very difficult… The grain was 13-14 %… is it true volunteers survive for years ? And what pgr program are you using? Glad you have your combine going again 👍

@Secret Agronomist , thank you for the above …I didn’t use cerone or Terpal but everything else similar… did 1 ltr Ccc 750 .
Patience is difficult in continuous week of 30c … an absolute rarity over here ! .. maybe I should give it more shot to see if I can keep it short.. I feel wet harvest would test my lack of patience !!

Usually from 225 to 250 seeds/m2 I think a pack is 6Ha at 200 so a bit more than they suggest. I didn't use the cerone one year as it was dry and stressy, the stuff was 7 foot tall one week and 18 inches the next :( I think that is a key part of the programmes, I've went up from 0.1 FB 0.15 moddus to my current programme. The full label rate for cerone is 1L/Ha so there is scope for more or swapping to Terpal which gives you extra chemical but is more expensive. Rye in this year is about £80/ha cheaper than wheat to grow and next year will be a bigger difference still as the extra 50kg/ha N that wheat needs will be £100/ha by itself.
Get odd bits of ergot but only on late tillers in the trams which get sorted out with a pre harvest pass with the sprayer putting on roundup. I am 100% plough and power harrow so that maybe helps with ergot control?
We aren't usually starting to harvest until mid August, although I've cut wheat on the 6th of August before in a really dry year so it shows you how light we are. PH13 postcode BTW.

Great information 👍… I’m super impressed with yields… we had to drive a tractor wheel on straw in order for Baler to stop it from rolling into a ball ! We quite often don’t start wheat until last days of August so to be finished harvest today 14th is unique … I noticed that the few patches that were down , slightly overlapped ( even with section control) were flat , flat !

I think if I had 1300 acres of rye , I wouldn’t sleep 😴!!!… best of luck and hope you get the weather to harvest successfully 👍
Apologies, I've got 500 of rye, 550 of wheat and 250 of spring barley. 1300 of rye would be too much for me! I think I would need 2 combines. We only started last Monday, that crop had been sprayed off 7 days prior. About 800 acres is ready to go now with rest following nicely, about 100 of barley was sown mid May after carrots so won't be ready unti, September.
I am tempted to grow more rye though but the market makes me nervous.

Do you get much crop loss spraying it off with it being so high?
