Hydraulic solenoid on Bomag

I have had a problem on an old Bomag roll with the Vib part not working. Well I have it working again but not sure i have grasped how it works. It would seem the switch has live power all the time and I had assume that it was on on or off. When I had everything disconnected I could make the vib work by flashing the feed and return together. To stop the vib it the wire needed flashing together again. There appears to be some kind of old style aluminium relay between the switch and solenoid.

They did tend to have a circuit board and the switch for vib activation was just a momentary push to make switch.
