My brother in law had a go at growing wheat for the wheat grass fad a few years ago, not big scale but it grew like stink. if you were looking to feed livestock on it you would need a hell of a lot of it all running at different stages.

Somewhere near Quinter , Ks
600 ewes , feedlot system for a lot of the year
Dry ewes on old prairie were supplemented with Barley (i think for vit B??)
Electricity was generated by a wind turbine (plenty of that in Ks ) and water from a well
It was in it's 2nd year i think but they seemed keen to expand it as it would be cheaper than buying more land

All feeding out seems a faff to me ---for example i wouldn't want to have to feed hay/cake every day
But different solutions for different systems i guess

I did an economic assessment of the system in about 1982. It was completely and utterly useless, stupid, potty and senseless.

The one place I could justify it is if an Oil Sheik in an arid desert wanted to keep a house cow to provide milk for himself or non-vegan members of his Harem. Even then, he would need a three-legged stool and a stainless-steel pail to milk it, and a fridge or porous earthenware jars to keep the milk fresh.
And of course he could more sensibly import high-density hay bales from Forage Trader or other reputable hay and straw merchant.

we looked into it years ago , our biggest concern was listeria (with sheep) . good feed though and not good indoors for bedding as its obviously a very wet feed which can lead to bad feet maybe joint ill in lambs
