I want a Gun... what to do?

Shooting is all about decisions,, If its for the social enjoyment of shooting , get a shotgun.
For pure vermin control get a HMR 17 rifle.
If you enjoy solving technical problems and have a bit of OCD, get a center fire rifle

Slight hijack. Have a .243 and a ruger semi auto .22. Use .243 for foxes and deer at night and the .22 for keeping pigions off the rape. Really want something to take out the cheeky crow / magpie at decent distances,150m plus. Is the HMR 17 the way forward?

Ideally I want something robust that can take some stick, have a bullet which keeps flat but brakes up, before slotting the house wife hanging out her washing on the next door farm.

What do rounds cost? Is a scope essential, more to break etc. I like an iron sight, less bulk. I would use then.22 more but the barrel is bent and can't keep a group, perfect for multiple shots onto a flock feeding though.

Hmr is perfect for crows 150m plus
Esp if you just want to buy ammo and get going rather than home load.

Would have thought scope is essential for 150m shots, it's hard enough at that range with a scope!

Hmr rounds about £10 per 50 ex vat

Semi auto 22 aren't particularly good for keeping a tight group. Bolt action are much better.
Get an hmr.

HMR for now , but there is a better 17 rimfire ,just waiting to come across the pond.
just now i is spot on the crows that perch on the tree at 77 meters lazered. the next safe tree
is 125, starting to get that one dialed in, after that its 225m which i hoping to train the 223 at.
After that they sit at 400m which i can only dream about for now.
That bloke RIP260 has a lot to answer for

and get a gun cabinet thats bigger than what you need my 3 gun cabinet struggles with 2 guns without banging them together if i put my airgun in there all touching When i buy my own house ill fit a ten gun one in an be done with

Thinking about it i not sure a big cabinet is a good idea, it just becomes an invitation to fill it.
Mind, a clay gun, a skeet gun, a wildfowling shotgun, a game shotgun, a rimfire auto, a HMR,
a foxing rifle, a NV rifle, small deer rifle, big deer rifle, then the various competition rifles plus a place for the reloading gear.
Maybe a 10 gun cabinet not enough. Perhaps the new house needs a dedicated gun room

I've got a 12 the same. But it's knackered, only makes half the cartridges go bang now.

Ha! I had exactly the same problem. Some times it would fire the top barrel first, sometimes the bottom, sometimes it wouldn't fire at all, and sometimes it would fire even when I didn't ask it to. So I got rid!

I need the semi auto for pigions, it's very affective.

Don't fancy loading my own, not my thing really.

I could use the .243 more but I am not convinced I can take a crow safely and accurately at 200+ metres, fox at 120 is fine. It's a bit OTT For corvid / brown crow controll too!

So, what sort of money would a respectable HMR cost? I don't need pretty looking things, it's a tool to do a job not get posted on Instagram!

Can't go wrong with a CZ varmint IMO. Think the gun is £300 odd, but I might be wrong? Really robust gun and fires dead on

243 is perfect round for 200+300

So if you had to shoot a crow at 200 m with dubious back drops (motorway embankment...!) woukd you pick the .243 or .17 HMR?
Shouldnt be taking anyshot unless you have a safe backstop? A 17 will still kill someone just asmuch as a .243 and 243 is point an shoot at that range more likely to go wrong with the 17 judging the range wrong an aiming to high

Seriously guys, did you not see the ! There. Been shooting since I was 6 yrs old and not managed to kill anyone yet, and I am confident to say it's was not luck but more judgement.

Before I was even allowed to pick up a gun dad shot a marrow at close range with me to understand how dangerous a gun was. I also had to learn the fathers advice poem by heart, something my kids will have to do too.

My point was I thought a .17 would break up on impact better than a .243 on harder ground, like stubles over harvest for example
