Ifor Williams P8 trailer brakes

Hi

Have an old ifor P8 lying around I need to use. It has an old braking system which is knackered. I've found the below on lind:

A trailer with a GVW of 750kg or lower, is not required to have brakes, but if brakes are fitted they must be in full working order. A trailer with a GVW from 751kg up to 3,500kg is required to have brakes, normally over-run (inertia) brakes that operate automatically are fitted

Question is, do I need to replace system or just remove what I can to make it road legal, given it states that if brakes are fitted they should be in full working order? I'll only have 100kg or inside trailer, so weight shouldn't be an issue.

Cheers

GVW isn't the weight it is on a given day; it's the maximum permissible gross weight. If it's fitted with brakes, I expect the current GVW is greater than 750kg. If so, you'd also need to get it replated down to 750kg. No idea how you'd go about doing that legally.
GVW isn't relevant. MGW is important; it's the maximum permissible gross weight of the trailer including its load. If it's fitted with brakes, I expect the current MGW is greater than 750kg. If so, you'd also need to get it replated down to 750kg. No idea how you'd go about doing that legally.

So what you're proposing is probably technically possible, but it's also probably much more hassle than just hiring a trailer...

ETA: I just checked my booklet, and it looks like I may be a bit confused. I was thinking of MGW, not GVW.

Finally found the bit I was looking for. MAM of more than 750kg? You need brakes. MAM is basically the same as MGW, so my original comment stands. (Excepting the fact I got GVW and MGW mixed up... Now amended.)

For info, it's from this booklet:

Stick it on ebay, someone will pay at least 60% the cost of a new one for it if its tidy looking. Then take what you were planning on spending on repairs, ad a little and invest in a new one ?

it always amazes me how much people pay for s/h trailers

Not any more! Former consultant engineer (very desk-based); current incoming manager of 500 outdoor sows, farrow to finish (very much not desk-based). Wear work gloves most of the time, so my hands are generally not as battered and bruised as they could be. Definite progress from when I used to help on the farm 10 or 15 years ago.
