Ifor Williams trailer wheel stuck on hub

The Ifor Williams trailer has a flat. Simple, just undo the four wheel nuts and take the wheel to the tyre repairers....

The only problem is, it won't pull off the hub! I've removed the four wheel nuts and tried tapping around the rim with a 14lb hammer but it won't budge. The wheel spins OK so it is NOT the usual brake shoe sticking to the drum and the brake is off. I've given it a squirt of Plusgas and will leave it over night, but any ideas? Heat?

Can you blow it up and drive round the yard or lane with the wheel nuts well slackened but not right off and turn sharp? Failing that, you're not hitting it hard enough with the sledge. ;)

Just noticed, you've two threads going on this....

That doesn't surprise me. TFF was reluctant to load even one earlier! Very slow speeds here and the electrons are rebelling.

I'll have another crack at it tomorrow. Maybe go out with a torch before bed and squirt some Plusgas behind the rim too.

When you do get it off put copper grease on back of wheel for next time. I do everything now with wheels, steel or alloy wheels, saves hours of fun knocking wheels off on side of road.

Oh. I agree. Some kind person gave me a couple of tins of Never Seize and I use that a lot, but I've never heard of a wheel sticking to the hub!

Apparently happens a lot with lorry wheels, particularly the alloy plates ones due to galvanic corrosion. I had it happen with my Land Rover the other day (alloys), wheel hadn’t been off for a few years, loosened the wheel nuts, drove it over a few bumps, bingo.

Ivor are just steel wheels, so I guess it has just rusted in place.

Had a stuck alloy on old Rangey, tyre place mentioned loosening the wheel nuts and taking some roundabouts at speed (they couldn't get it off in the shop). Tried hard cornering on their yard, outer tyres were tucked under the wheel arches, no joy. Eventually ended up with one person turning the wheel from side to side and another two with sledgehammers bashing the wheel off. Turned out four of the wheels had been ground out to fit the hub but not the spare.
