IH 434 - need some info please...

So little bro has picked up an IH434 as his first tractor...
1968 vintage, runner - but needs some work (as expected). The question is, can he use a modern 10w30 universal oil in the engine, as opposed to the monograde 30 oil specced in the handbook?. He is concerned about modern oils holding the soot particles in suspension, as opposed to the "classic" monogrades where the sludge collected in the bottom of the sump, which the tractor was designed for. My personal take is that he should run the multigrade and change the oil a couple of times to clear any sludge (changing the filter as well, of course...).
Any feedback / ideas are appreciated :)

Sounds like it's not going to do much work or hours ?
It will be fine with 10/30 universal although I'd be inclined to use a 15/40 engine oil personally.
Depending on what's been used in it previously be aware a modern engine oil will contain detergents & if the engine is very dirty internally & they are dirty engines, it will be worth doing an additional oil change after about 50 hours, then every 100 hours.
It could be worth whipping the rocker cover off to see just how much crud is stuck to the inside.

I would go for something slightly thicker myself
For 1 oil pressure
2 thin oil will leak
3 the detergents clean the engine to much ie around seals etc

You can put it in to run it and clean it a tad inside but just cheap low quality oil is best suited for these old girls a 20/50 is good enough

Dont forget to take the sump off and clean the oil pump pickup filter.

Crank with the strangler pulled for 5-10 seconds when you fill it back up to allow time for the filter bowl to fill back up and oil pressure to rise before restarting.

Thanks for the feedback and info :)
It won't be doing much real work - a restro project / toy TBH. The concern was about what effect a detergent oil would have, my personal take is that a leaky seal should be replaced, not rely on gunge to stop the leak.
The oil I've picked up for him actually is Morris', and 25ltrs means bro will have plenty to do a flush or two and top-up leakage. I'll pass on the idea to drop the sump and check the pump screen, and the rocker cover to check for sludge, and also valve clearances while he's in there. He currently wants to keep it as authentic as possible, so the spin-on filter isn't likely - at least, not until he's had to change the element type a few times...
