IH 885 Torque Amp troubles?

Our 1984 runabout has been behaving a bit odd!
Occasionally when you put it gear and go to move off it almost doesn’t move other than a few feet forward very very slowly then you press the clutch peddle again and release and it’s fine as nothing’s wrong.
It has done it for a while, we thought it was to do with the clutch which was on the way out so we had it replaced but it’s still no better!
The Torque amp is in high range and we never use it after our 684 years ago got stuck in low range.
Anyone know what the signs of a failing Torque amp?

Probably the TA unit. Sounds a lot like our 784 before we fixed it. Low gear is driven by a one way bearing as described already. High gear is driven by the clutch plates. If it is the TA you have two options. 1 you replace the plates, bearing and shaft it runs on or 2 you get the kit that locks it in high gear. We got ours from intatrac. Was £100 a good few years ago for the exchange pack. I sent him our TA unit and a cheque and he sent back a ta with the plates all bolted together. You could do it yourself really. It's very simple when you see it. Startin tractors were advertising a proper plate to put into you own TA to do the same thing. It was £185 the last I seen but again that was a good few years ago. Intatrac are very knowledgeable. Worth a phone call.

It’s the sprag clutch in the TA , I don’t really know what that means but that’s what I was told. Like you we split the tractor did the clutch and then it did it again in case new clutch was incorrectly installed but obviously not. Anyway ours has been like you describe for 10 years and 1000hours without getting better or worse. Works in both low and high TA. @Gapples will explain exactly what is wrong

Yes, it's the sprag clutch slipping in the TA unit, this is a one-way clutch that grips the shaft & drives, when they get a bit worn ( & the shaft wears ) this is what happens, you release the clutch & basically nothing happens, press again & back up, off you go as if there's nothing wrong.
IF you don't need the TA you can strip them out & fit a plate in that makes it a solid drive without a splitter.

That sounds about right, going to look for workshop manual to see what’s really involved to do it .
