Not a BT one! Says it can do however many meters, but in reality can't work upstairs as the wall in the way is too thick

Do you mean VOIP?
Voice Over Internet Protocol I belive.

I use it through a company called Vonage - can't fault it. Works exactly like Skype but without the pictures.
Do you have an actual landline number for it.

Can you manage on broadband completely. Ie without a phone line?

I have 2 farms close together and one gets wireless broadband from the other

What is the best cordless phones for around farm and house
For cordless phones, anything using DECT technology should give the best range, clarity and battery life. I wouldn't recommend a cordless WiFI phone as It won't have as good a battery life compared to a DECT base station and handset.

There are some ruggedised versions out there as well but they will be quite expensive compared to your bog standard domestic type setup

You can 'attach' a landline number to it if you want - I didn't bother and just use the 03330 number that comes with it.
Mine is run without a telephone line - purely via wireless broadband via www.quickline.co.uk.

You just get a little box that plugs into your BB router, then you plug your phone into that. (y)
