The Ineos Grenadier thread

It is obviously barking for you and you couldn’t possibly justify one. However you probably couldn’t justify a new one back in 2008 either if your work pattern was similar to today’s.

I bought a LR 110 HiCap pickup with all of 67hp, and it even had a heater, heavy duty rear springs, power steering and a tow hitch, back in 1984 for £15000 + VAT. Adjusted for inflation that is actually £54,000 in today’s money plus VAT. The Grenadier and Defender today with the massive relative specification therefore look like very good value. It is unfortunate that farm incomes have not kept pace per unit of output, but that’s just how the world turns.

You could say that compared to a Gator at £30k, the Grenadier at 42 is a complete bargain

It’s 2022 why spend over 50k on something that already looks outdated
I was dropping lambs off at Sedgemoor on Monday morning and noticed a very smart IW tri axle trailer with an equally smart new type defender towing it. I chuckled to myself on the way out thinking his trailer probably cost more than my outfit (loaded), never mind the defender. Either he has a very big farm or another income from somewhere. I'll give JLR their due, the new defender doesn't look outdated, not from the outside anyway.

I drove a diesel maestro van a once I had to thrash it in 4th to get to 65mph change to 5th and it would slow down to 55mph .🤷‍♂️
Mine was a 4 Speed 1300 A series... 100 Tops... Burnt a hole in the piston after dicking about with the timing to give it more go... It got me Home... Spent a Boxing day sticking a new engine in. Was never the same after.

I agree but how big is the actual market for a machine you want? Only 3000 miles a year…. Electric it is then
And when I tow a 12ft cattle trailer to Wigtown Show how many re-charges would that be and how much would such a vehicle cost?

I would love an electric modern day version of a Citroen Mehari as a replacement for my car, quad and scooter

Its a work vehicle expected to last more than five years, at which point alloys will start to look grim. Especially if they get bashed. Alloys are available though, of course, for probably the majority in the UK that will want them for the school run.
Face it though, this is not a ‘looker’ and you will never make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

I'm not sure how they've managed to get that front end looking so awful.

I don't like Ineos's decision to let down Bridgend and I didn't like Ratcliffe's supporting Brexit and then moving that production to Europe. Very much like Dyson.

But, that 4 seater commercial station wagon is fairly unique at the moment and becoming more attractive.

But then again, £50k?! I'll shortly be selling my 13 plate Hilux as I think it's too good to run around cow tracks. Just bought a very well looked after discovery td5 for £4.5k. That's more like it!

Agree.... Very much double standards.

Yes that really annoyed me for a long time but Bridgend was never really a rational, practical or economic place to build these vehicles, especially after brexit with all the components being imported and the vehicles then exported. Ineos was just very fortunate in the timing of the availability of that large part of a Mercedes factory. I’m sure that if they had secured it a year sooner, the Grenadier would be being built with a Mercedes engine and gearbox rather than BMW and ZF specimens.

True for Ratcliffe , not so sure about Dyson. I was under the impression that he wanted to build factories in Oxfordshire, but despite doing a fair bit to please planning, they made it too difficult, so he went to the Far East, where there is also a lucrative market place.

They have updated their web site again and now claim that both two seater and five seater versions are certified as commercial vehicles. This is very good news indeed and very unusual for a five seater. Some compromises have been made to achieve this, the most obvious being that the five seater has blanked off rear side windows, although rear side doors appear as standard. They do hint that rear seat legroom is compromised in comparison to the ‘normal’ non-commercial fully glazed five seaters. I have registered for information for when pickup truck is announced.

The price of commercial variants looks to be far better value than its main rival, even when the Grenadier is specced up nicely. The PDF of my spec won’t upload but I can upload a screenshot

Note that I’ve specced a red painted chassis!
The price includes VAT.

Have you read or heard any more about how they've managed to get it's commercial status?

Surely they got the payload up to over the tonne? That would explain the different rear seats, perhaps, if they’d made them lighter.

FWIW, my old style 110 has 7 seats, windows in the back and is still a commercial which can take just over a tonne.

No, nothing. I really am quite surprised that they have managed it because I posted some while ago about the issue of them not having anything but a van available as a commercial class vehicle. I am amazed that they got it through in its current form and wonder whether the second row of seats are dreadfully compromised.
Hasn’t stopped me paying a deposit for one. Take the VAT away and the five seat Grenadier commercial fairly fully loaded with extras is very very competitive with a fairly basic LR Defender 110 van. Not cheap but excellent value in today’s market. No initial ‘luxury car tax’, saving a couple of thousand on initial purchase [applicable to cars over £40k] and at least £500/year cheaper on road duty for the first five or six years compared to similar type vehicles [based on emissions]. Plus business tax relief that isn’t applicable to cars/SUV’s.

Despite the Grenadier having near zero UK content, I’m pleasantly surprised. The one good thing about the Defender is that it has a British built engine, but I wonder which is best, the LR Ingenium 250hp or the BMW 250hp as fitted to Grenadier?
