Unbelievable. 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, more??

Never seen this number before & totally helpless. Running bird scare alarm, laser and bangers but they don't care anymore and frankly I have run out of ideas other than to feed towards dusk but I am doubting this will have any effect either other than to upset the cows' routine further (cf blood testing etc)

Any ideas (very carefully received)?

been there 20 years ago when milking

you can set drones to do a certain route and set them so when the battery goes flat they go to a certain spot to land, I don't know how to do it but I know it can be done, would this be an idea?
or have it just do a lap every 15mins?

don't know how long batterys last in them but if you could get couple hrs might be worth it?

25 min fly time on a dji phantom. But it will fly a mile route in about 1 min and return to a pre set place/yard. Take off and landing take most power followed by flying against the wind. I think flying into them as they arrive could well deter them for the day tho.

attach laser to drone, should be a good job.

sounds like best idea with drone is to do a less than 5 min lap then park up then go again in 10 mins. or just go for it as they come to land to keep them away.

Watching this thread with interest.

Birds (and animals) get used to pretty much anything given time, except natural predators that they know from experience are dangerous. Falconers use various devices to lift a lure high into the sky and then train their birds to fly up to catch it to get them fit for hunting wild quarry. So, they use balloons, kites, and now drones. Obviously, these don't work if the bird is frightened of them! Long term, I don't think starlings would be frightened off with a drone, but it would probably work short term. Trained falcons have been used for bird scaring with a lot more effect, but they and their handlers tend to be expensive.

There's a new gadget on the horizon, the 'Ornithopter', which has promise. It simulates the wing beat of a natural predator and some are very realistic. But also very expensive and only hired out for bird scaring at major airports at the moment. Birds know when a hawk is hunting and they know which species are dangerous.

I'd try the drone first. There are cheap ones advertised on TV for around £100, but maybe there's a hobbyist locally who would come out for a few £s? Next, I'd try a drone lifting a silhouette of a major predator. Google Images, "silhouette of peregrine falcon". There are bird scaring devices with silhouettes of raptors but, frankly, they are not convincing and sometimes show a species that is fairly benign and not even in hunting mode! Starlings know the difference between a serious predator like a peregrine or merlin but probably just shy away from something less threatening like a kestrel. It's terror that's needed! Google images came up with this of a peregrine which is typical of a falcon waiting to stoop onto prey:

Re Drone.
We have about 7ac of yard and the little pluckers just move from one bit to another now no matter what we throw at them. Totally immune to any scaring device now ... which suggests to me a cold winter coming so growing a beard!

Mind, if you could arm the drone .......
