Tractor not charging only 12 volt at battery . Put a new battery on 3 week ago. Thought must be alternator so put a new one on today connected wires up as were before but still on getting 12 volt back to battery . Wires that go into loom look good . Is there anything else within the charging system I’ve missed or have I been givin a dud alternator? I did play about with multimeter I’m no expert but there was 12 volt out alternator. Help

You should be getting at least 13.8v with the multi meter across the battery when it is charging.Sometimes a good rev can set them off.Are you using the same size pulley as before? Is the charging light working on the dash when the key is turned on?

Most alts won't charge unless the charge light is functioning. You need to determine if the light actually works. You likely have a big wire and smaller wire in the back of the alt. The smaller one is for the light. Disconnect it and with the key turned on,touch that wire to the alt body or to a clean bolt or such like. The light should come on.If it doesn't,you need to get it working. If the 2 wires are together in a plug, push a thin piece of wire into the spade of the smaller one and touch it to earth as above.

Alright okay I see there is two separate wires not in a plug . Is there a fuse or anything for it as I actually touched the two wires between a spanner and created a spark when I was taking it off. Wonder if I’ve done something then?

If there is a charging light it must work, when the ignition is switched on, but engine not running. This triggers the alternator.
The alternator needs power and this comes through the light. When the alternator is running and producing power it pumps a positive current into this light, so there is no longer a difference between the switch and the alternator. As there is no difference in Voltage the light will go out.

Okay so light not on took the small wire off and earthed it but still no light with ignition on. Weird thing though when I went to it to start with I must have left ignition on from yesterday and the charge light was in but when I switched ignition off then on again it won’t come back on . Wires look fine rim alternator into loom. What do I do??

I'd look at the connectors on the ignition switch, at least waggle them. Could also be the internal contact inside the switch, again waggle the key, may need a new switch though. Contact cleaner spray might help on connectors you can get at. (Servisol if you can still get it)

How do u get in behind ignition switch it’s like a sealed surround
Aaagh! Not an easy one then. If you haven't got a meter connect bulb between either the thick and thin wire on the alternator and operate the ignition switch or the thin wire and battery+. Disconnect from the alternator first to eliminate that.
I'm talking rubbish. Connect the bulb between thin wire and alt body so the circuit is: +12 from the battery, through the ignition switch, charge warning lamp, your bulb and alt body. If it glows, try it through chassis as there may be a poor connection between the alt body and chassis.

Got into behind the dash and wiring looks fine round the ignition and to the charge light but still no light on .

If your instruments all work the +12 is reaching the ignition switch. From there it's through the charge warning lamp , ,down the thin wire to the alternator, through the alternator field winding to the frame, then, hopefully, through the fixing bolts to connect to chassis which the battery -12 is also connected to.
