Inverter

Toying with the idea of getting an inverter fitted in my lorry for running a kettle and microwave. Does anyone know what size I would need and a decent place to get one???

Inverters are fine for intermittent use, but for extended use in vehicles, I'd really be looking to beef up the batteries and alternator as you will simply drain the battery(ies) in no time.

There is less than 0.5v difference between a battery which will start the engine and one which won't even click the starter solenoid.

Really high current draw devices - anything with an element or producing an arc - I would in preference run directly using an engine or generator.

Presume you need the van engine running constantly to keep the battery topped up?
I have two batteries and a split charging set up! the second battery is the biggest truck battery i could get, (not sure of the No.) it charges as your driving and holds a great charge can start the compressor about 10 -12 times without starting the van, the slit charge also insures the vans own battery never goes any lower than what will start the van.

Second battery would be a good idea with a a split charging circuit as @cps has. Always able to start the engine with the original battery. You can charge the second battery using a relay, the contacts of the relay only close, connecting the batteries together for charging, when the charging light goes out. As soon as you stop the engine the second battery is disconnected from the rest of the circuit, original battery. Just connect the inverter to the second battery, but it wont last long, without starting the engine.

I like your priorities Kettle and Microwave .............. ;)
Get as small a kettle as you can (in Watts) and the smallest Microwave (again in watts)
