Iodine overdose

Location

I’ve been felling really shitty for about 10-14 days now. Coughing a lot of flem and exhausted. Today I’m in agony moving with my whole body hurting. I’ve only managed a few hours work this afternoon and now I’m back inside lieing down.

Could an overdose of strong naval iodine be absorbed through the skin and cause problems?

I know the answer is probably go to the doctors and suggest it but I hate having bloods taken makes me feel like crap for ages so wondering if the collective might have a solution first.

I can't see that the absorbed dose of iodine you have had has anything to do with it. Iodine has only a minor role in the body and any surplus is disposed of in the urine fairly quickly.

Coughing up a lot of flem- sounds like a chest infection surely, these can make you feel pretty rotten for a long time.

The first thing they are going to want to do is listen to your chest I would think. Bloods are fairly routine and show up infection and inflammation etc very readily. Take a urine sample to the GPs with you when you go and they can dip test it there, doubt it will show anything though, urine is a sort of roundabout way of looking at the blood almost.

Is your phlegm clear coloured or brown or green? Or even red? Brown or green is a sign of infection, red is blood and should be brought to the attention of a doctor immediately.

Although this sounds more like some type of cold/flu do mention to the doctor that you have been handling strong navel iodine as iodine can have an effect on the thyroid and how the thyroid hormones are produced in the body.

Was once at a blackening and bride got iodine poured over her! Ended up in hospital. Not sure of symptoms.
Some people already have (or develop) a sensitivity or allergy to iodine which is why repeat iodine would dressing (eg inadine) is usually restricted to about 4 weeks. This can be a sensitivity - contact dermatitis or hives - or a full anaphylaxis. Not likely to cause coughing or phlegm though, sounds more likely to be a chest infection or flu.

Definitely not red anyway so a good start. Mostly been green.

Absolutely, though this does not discourage surgical teams from lathering povidone-iodine onto people prior to surgery.
