Decided to spray my in calf heifers with iodine on their backs this time.

They were brought inside yesterday but don't calve til February/March.

When should I start spraying them and how much? How often?

I've 3 in the shed will they not just lick it off their backs? Confused.

A good mineral should cover the issue, certainly for the last trimester (selenium, zinc, iodine etc) but if you want to be doing it then I think much closer to calving is really the time for iodine and is usually a shutting the door after the horse has bolted kind of thing.

With only 3 heifers bolusing isn't cost effective as you have to purchase in large numbers.

Any other way of getting minerals into them? I will be buying a pre calving tub this week - whats the best on the market?

iodine, for us, is a problem we find feeding kale/rape, then we just pour diluted iodine down their backs, it is easily absorbed, if they lick each other fine, We also put tablets in the water trough, and all cows I/c hfrs have min boluses, we thought by bolusing we would be ok, we were not ! that's why we do extra iodine.

we can buy as few boluses as we wish from our vet. Also iodine is not the only issue, selenium is really important pre-calving

I use an iodine pour on from a company called mayo after iodine problems last year. My mate had a similar problem this year so i gave him some pour on and the last 5 cows calved no problems.
While he had it I had a cow calve with a les than lively calf which took a while to get going. Had the pour on Back and did the remaining cows left to calve and they virtually came out of the cow and bounced back up they were that much more lively.

At what stage do you apply the pour on, and do you have the exact name of the iodine pour on?

Can you get an iodine and selenium bolus?
We use Oligovet dry cow bolus which is the ones our vets settled on as the best dry cow bolus. But this is a specific dry cow bolus rather than one for areas where there are specific soil / forage deficiencies. It is good for iodine, selenium, cobalt and a few others I can;t remember. A bolus lasts 12 weeks. Just looked and they do a pre-calver for sucklers, you would need to find who supplies them locally. https://www.vetalis.fr/en/produits/oligovet-pre-velage-2/
