iPad and Vaddy drill.

Could not reply to you previous thread as its ended. Commissioned my new RD300 with e control on Thursday. First you just need to get your head round the iPad is just replacing the control box that everyone has used for years with drills etc. it's nice and neat screen which is self explanatory. I run ISOBUS through a 2630 for section control, and variable seed rate and perhaps if the software can be perfected variable drilling depth. The real benefit is you will only need one 'controller' saving 1 expense and 2 a side window you can see out off rather be cluttered with half a dozen controllers and their works of art mounting systems! It is as Clive says " the future"

You have a screen that will do what you need why add another

.?? iPad
Because it's handy to have your variable rate maps and steering etc running on the Isobus (2630 screen) and with a glance check all the drill info out on the iPad, this is very helpful on the Tempo when checking planting accuracy
Yes it is possible to run everything on the isobus screen and not have the iPad, but this means changing pages on the isobus screen, there are quite a few people controlling their Väderstad drill this way.

I bought a Tempo last year but could not specify the e control because I was using Trimble for section control. Do you know if this is still the case?

Trimble FMX is now compatible with a criteria
A software update to allow section control on Tempo was available from February 2015
A list of compatible isobus systems and what each can do is available on the vaderstad website

Vadderstadt Say their drills don't need off sett yet they then say the off set can't be adjusted on screen.... Which it can!

Thanks for that, but looking at the link it seems that the Tempo can use the ISOBUS directly with the Trimble FMX but not the e control if using the Trimbles section control. I will check it out with my contact at Vaderstad factory.

It worked. I did it driving alternate 3m strips. Sorry about Mn deficiency but it's an unharvested HLS crop, so not supposed to spray it. Must say iPad is great. You take it with you when calibrating the drill. Simples

How did you get on with the Tempo??
Just thinking of buying one, any comments?
Did 400ha last season and loved it.
Pro's; Plants at around 99% at 11 to 14km/hr and spacing is great
Can be calibrated in the yard
Everything is electric so no chains to lube every day
Because it has it's own alternator 125hp (or less) tractor can handle a 8 row no problem, maybe bit higher if you have hills
Normally in my area we only use American planters mainly JD because of their physical strength but the Tempo looks like it's up with them
Easily folds to 3.1mtr
Vaderstad is very customer friendly and is open to suggestions. I was the first in the world to plant pumpkins and they specially made me a set of new seed meters and came to NZ to commission them!!
Cons; Struggles to cope with high fert rates (350kg/ha plus) at high speed though your fert maybe better quality than ours with less fines to clog up the chevon meters
In really hard dry conditions, which you probably won't have, the soft press wheel struggled to get down into the planting slot to hold the seed in place
I can't use the iPad with Trimble section control so are stuck with the old Control Station though I'm sure they're working on it. Get the iPad if you can.
I would have no hesitation in recommending it.

It looks lovely but I wonder how the iPad will work after two-three years of use or more. Will it take the dust, moist conditions etc.. and still work well? I have spoken to a local tulip grower that uses a home made app for logging variety's at planting time. He started using iPads but now buys the cheapest Android versions he can find at Lidl for £80 because they all break down eventually...

To be honest most of us upgrade our devices after 3yrs or so, it's a sign of our disposable society. First thing I do is put a tough case on a new phone, tablet, etc. Kids reckon they look ugly but I don't care!! Having said that I think you have to take the iPad out of any case to fit the Vaderstad holder.

What I thought as well. The holder from Väderstad is pretty robust but doesn't protect against dust? Which is my biggest fear. My iPad is three years old now and still works fine. I hope it will last another three at least! My mother uses an old iPad 1, one of the first bought in the US when they were launched, and that has recently been disposed as it was getting a bit useless. Problem is Apple just won't support the software, making it useless over time. They get away with it..

I don't think Apple is alone in that, Android do the same, my Trimble 500 is no longer supported and so on. My biggest problem re the iPad wouldn't be dust but getting it away from the kids!!

Haha well yes that is a very valid point indeed! You'll now end up buying another one for the kids. I've seen two year olds handle an iPad quicker than your average grown up.

Not providing updates is a big problem for all electronics it seems. Time moves quickly. It has come to the absurd point where you can't get bits for two-three year old stuff! People forget the ever increasing prices as well. I love my iPhone but prices are just incredibly stupid.

But there is a way around that! So far I've drowned one in the spa pool, one in a French river near Millau, and my wife drowned one in her handbag so upgraded each time with the help of insurance!! Those drownings did actually happen!
