Irrigation Pump Suction Alternatives

Hello,

Looking to replace an 8 inch diameter suction pipe on one of our pumps. The old one is steel, and must have been bore casing. Would be 30 years old.

The suction is 15 metres long with a foot valve. We pump off the river.

What are you using in the UK for this size suction? We use either black poly pipe which is floated at the river surface, or white PVC pipe which is fixed and submerged well under the water line.

Found this thread while searching for something else..

over here is usually flexible suction hose which is spiral reinforced. Normally 5-6 meters length ran off a diesel pumpset.

Pump houses would be steel pipe or on longer distances such as yours then PE pipe fusion welded together normally. But any I’ve been involved with have all been positive pressure, so there is a floating booster pump out in the reservoir which feeds the main pumps in the pump house.

Cheers, thanks for that. Have a black poly one piece length with foot valve on end, but didn't put it on as its on flotation and needs to be pulled out when the river rises. The position was awkward, so joined 6 mtr lengths of 6 inch pvc and fixed in place so never needs to be
removed.
