Is 28t replacing 29t

We have been finding that this year the newer lorries are only being loaded just over 28t when the weights come back. We do get some 30t ones which even the loads out but a lot more with 28, is this due to the driver being careful, or newer lorries weighing more. If some of the lorries never had so many lights on maybe I could get more on :)

I know nothing about trucks but talking to the openfield drivers who were here in the summer their new trucks are a fancy spec which weighed more empty so they cant carry as much grain. Driver was saying how much extra through the year he could haul if they had maxed the capacity.

All depends on the vehicle's tare weight, so if its a day cab (so can carry 30.5mt) or if its a big sleeper with dual tanks on (so may only carry 28mt if he's lucky).

Hauliers paying drivers a tonnage bonus is discouraged and frowned upon these days.

Thats about it, newer trucks have a euro 6 (i think) engine in and much bigger exhaust system. Think ours carry just under 29 tonnes but have a smaller tag axle on the unit. Had a couple of new scania's in last week who were around 29.5 tonnes pay load.

Yes I've noticed the same this year. I did think it applied to the better sales only but that has not turned out to be the case. I think I shall sell on basis of 28 t loads from now on.

So just out of interest what is the highest legal payload you can get with a bulker? I know most are around the 29 ton mark but if you could find a lighter truck etc.

I also had a farmer put 4t of OSR on a lorry destined for Liverpool. He had the bright idea to call me 2 hours later to let me know, and suggest I top him up on route! When I called the driver, he was past Manchester and about to hit Liverpool.....nice cap charge on that one!

I once had 37t in over had to drop the trailer on the bridge and it was almost 44t itself only moved 10 miles from farm to merchant yard , but no heavy units are common now along with automatic sheet and twin stacks as standard!

Heard not so long ago that a large haulage firm this way we're specifying as much as they could of the truck in aluminium? to save weight so they could carry more per trip. Makes a lot of sense and seems to me backwards to have a heavier lorry which means you can carry less '

Most of the lorries this season have had the automatic opening sheeting system which must weigh a fair bit and reduce what they can carry to stay in-weight.

I had a hero turn up at Hull a few years ago with 34t on......no he wasn't legal!

Was probably me that loaded him!! Was his first day on the job, thought to myself he should be loaded by now so asked him and he said oh got so an so on, keep going he said!!! I had to explain he was overweight and what he should be aiming for!! Didn't believe me and was adamant he wanted 44t!!!!
