This is a question not an assumption.

One young first time farmer on here states his cop as 16ppl
and sells at 38ppl

Doesn't sound bad to me !

So is the worst now over and has a new dawn began?
At those figures thats extremely impressive but does the business have enough scale to pay a sustainable wage to the young man ? Say £30k/year ?

I think there would be a lot more chance than trying to do the same with
either sheep or sucklercows whilst reinvesting in your business at the same time.

Our buying group had their normal feed requirement covered by the merchant forward buying. But he has had an increase in demand for the winter of over 20% so he does not have enough forward cover we've all had to re-forecast and the price will be substantially higher as prices have risen of all the commodities he needs as ingredients. That does not make for a cheap winter and that's without accounting for any other extra requirements for forage. I would add that I suspect a lot of that increase in feed is coming from the spring calvers as they don't normally make much silage. So 16ppl? I'd like to see the evidence. 38ppl would be nice too, our standard litre price is not even 30ppl.

We're has 38ppl come from, we had 22.8ppl in May!
Can’t remember my May price off hand but we’ve been on 28ppl the last couple of months with a 1.5p rise to cone in September, that price won’t be far out for most non aligned contracts, the supermarkets paying probably no more tha 2p more on average.
That 38ppl is an exceptional milk price as is 16p COP, I would guess it’s on a spring block calving heard with high fat and protein,

One innovative young farmer is milking Belgian blue cross cows
He told me he's getting about a quarter less milk than his holsteins
but those cows are lasting much longer, better on their feet and have a proper cull
value whilst also producing a calf he can sell at top money.

Its interesting to see different approaches!

We have milked them in the past and milking one at the moment great milking cows but very poor butterfat and protein.

Whats your ideal cow if you factor
in longevity ,calf you can sell, good on feet whilst
producing enough milk of the right quality?

Holstein, I have lifted two cows feet this year. As for calves sexed semen this year and blues with limmy to tidy up. As for the rest being very selective for bulls and being a hell of a lucky dad has been breeding for these traits before me.

Years ago i remember an article about milking Simmentals, they were bred to produce
milk for cheese production and the Bf and protein %ages were as high as Jerseys,
but, because of their stronger frames they would throw a decent calf.
