Is/Has Global warming really had any effect on your farming business?

Ok I'll bite.

No, global warming hasn't affected our business.

But the expense of contraptions and legislation forced upon us to combat this supposed threat that only certain well educated scientists can seem to see has cost many unnecessary hours of downtime and thousands in $$$ .

That is my thoughts but it will be interesting to hear what others have to say.

If the weather patterns remain, then yes.

Long spring dry spell great for field work and 1st cut silage but badly affects subsequent silage cuts as grass starts heading in response to drought

I would also say that there seems to be more storms these days too ... or perhaps that is a consequence of naming them?

I've seen a profound change in the vegetation on the homestead.
Gorse proliferates, brambles and hazelnuts now grow 100'+ higher than they used to.
In bye grass grows almost continuously, where it used to shut down for app 3 months.
Molinia dominates larger areas of hill, heather is knackered.

These have varying causes, which seem to include lack of prolonged bone crunching frosts, possibly raised CO2, possibly increased nitrates.

Extended worms season
must be more
Fluke all year round.
Ticks! The past four years have seen ticks on farm.
Clostridial disease cropping up months earlier than normal.

A shift in the traditional Devon monsoon season. Heavier downpours when they come.

The biggest impact here is wetter years
4 inches on average mostly the extra is June to December over the last 20 years

global warming was supposed to give us hotter dryer summers but we have warmer wetter
Lighter freer draining land has benefited

One school of thought is that climate change could result in significantly cooler temperatures. As there is a possibility that the gulf stream effect that keeps the UK in a maritime climate will sto. Making in not only cooler, but considerably drier and reducing land suitable for arable to as little as 7%. :scratchhead:

It's not global warming it's climate change. Cows suffering from heat stress in summer and some heat-related abortions and also stress in calves. Weather seems to be less predictable and more extreme; wet often means very wet, dry means very dry, with all that means in farming.

Change in climates has affected us, yes.

15 years ago we were growing 120ac potatoes, 280 ac red beet, 50ac carrots, 60ac daffs. plus 650 cereals. Around 2007/09 the seasons became so unpredictable that we were never out of the bit, constant tail chasing and fire fighting. Kept trying till 2012, but that year just about did for me and decisions were made to scale back. Soil wasn’t recovering either. Still trying to fix it.

In hindsight, the cropping regime was probably unrealistic for where we are, but it did work for many years. From a personal perspective, the change in climate probably saved my sanity/life, so, swings and roundabouts! 😆

Do you still grow any beetroot? I thought that was just a morrayshire thing.

Minus 41 wind chill here tonight. I’d be happy with any global warming about now. Been bitter cold since mid December with more snow than in the past five years combined. Wet spring ahead I’m thinking. Not looking forward to it Rather see dust blowing than mud plugging my drill.
