Is it cheaper to change tyres yourself?

I’ve got a tractor and telehandler wanting tyres soon and was wondering if it’s much cheaper for me to buy tyres online (such as big tyres.co.uk) or is it not worth it and let local tyre firm do them?

You could always ask them the price of just fitting tyres if you bought them yourself. They may be more than happy to do so.

I keep a spare tyre on the place for some implements as the tyre company cannot always keep stock of everything and I know they may take several days to arrive.

Swapped out my Kramer tyres all round two years ago. Bought them online and though what a bagain compared to a quote from a local company...

Once I had them fitted by another company, (absolute bitches to fit!!) the saving had gone. I do all smaller tyres, or used to.

No problem if your doing tractor tyres with tubes. I always find it harder putting them on tubeless, but I only do it when I am in need of a bit of SM pleasure. :D
A trick Dad showed me years ago was to pull a well lubed slightly too small inner tube over a wheel and inflate that to fill the gap then inflate the tyre. If your lucky the tyre will push the inner tube up.
If your unlucky the tube might stay put. You can run them like that if they seal but they can look a bit odd. I have a 16 inch inner tube hanging out of the side of a 22.5 inch rim on the plough at the moment. After a while running inflated they will often come out a bit easier without the tube the next time you try.

Never heard of that method. I just use a bead blaster on smaller tyres and ratchet straps on big ones.

I do all mine. Carry a multitude of spare wheels and tires. prefere tubed tires as less chance of a leaky bead and having to clean the rim super clean. Use easy start to mount tubless that won’t inflate but gotta be smart about it or 🤕

NO let the team do the job. Simples. Pay the money and as if by magic you have completed a number of other jobs without all the hassle & effort.

Well good on you. F’ing hard work, a heap of equipment and a compressor.
If thats your way then ok but IMO asking the local team to visit, do and presto it’s done is just a ‘phone call away, leaving one time to do something much more useful. 👍

When I can change a tire or fix a flat quicker than they can drive here I’d rather break a sweat fir ten minutes than wait. Rarely have a flat parked in the yard so I carry a spare for trailed implements. Once you’ve mastered the art of changing tires it’s pretty easy.
